この懸賞論文は、前回まで立命館アジア太平洋大学が主催していたものであるが、今回から立命館大学と共催することとなった。その第１回に、国内から312、海外から72の計384の論文が集まった。第１次と第２次の選考の結果、18論文が最終選考に残った。ここでは、最終選考で判断の基準とした点について述べることにする。今後、応募される際の参考としていただきたい。 審査員が頭を悩ませた第一は、エッセー風の作品をどのように評価するかという点である。特に、そのような作品の中に、文章力に秀でたものが多かったため、なおさら判断が難しくなった。審査員は、エッセーといっても、少なくとも文章の展開は論理的でなければならない、という結論に達した。 次の基準は、自分の意見と、参考にした文献や資料に基づく意見が、峻別できているかということである。論文は、本来、先人の思想や論理あるいは概念を利用しながら、自分の思考を発展させるものである。ある思考が、自分のものか他人のものかを、何らかの方法で示すことは、高校生といえども必要なことである。最終選考に残った論文は独創的な意見を書いたものも多かったが、他文献の引用なのかどうかが不明なものがあり、その真価を判断できないものがあった。 審査員の意見が一致したのは、最終選考に残った作品の文章力の高さであった。昨今言われる、若者の文章力が低下したという指摘は、今回については通用しなかった。心強い誤算であった。 審査員一同、来年は一層優れた作品が、国内外から集まることを期待している。 |

There were 384 essays from all over the world entered in this competition. After two screenings, eighteen essays were selected at the discretion of the judges. Here, I would like to say a few words about the criteria used for evaluating your essays at the final stage. I hope you will find this useful when you enter a future essay competition. One difficulty that the judges encountered was, how to appraise the "composition-like" essays. The students who wrote these were excellent writers and this made assessment very difficult compared with other works. However, we came to the conclusion that even composition-like essays should demonstrate a logical train of thought. Another important point to be aware of is clearly distinguishing your own ideas from other people's. Take advantage of other people' notions and logic and use these as a base to evolve your own ideas and opinions through your essay. However, you must be very precise and ensure that it is easy for the reader to differentiate between your own personal thoughts and those of others. Although some essays incorporated some very interesting ideas, it was not possible to recognise their true value as we could not tell if the ideas were borrowed or not. Recently, it is often said that the writing skills of young people are getting worse. However, this criticism certainly did not apply to this essay competition. The essays that were read were all of a very high standard. We are looking forward to receiving many more essays from many more countries. |
