Since 2002 the Department of Geography has taken part in the 21th century's COE program and Global COE program of Ministry of Culture, Society, Science, and Technology which aims to produce a global centre of excellence. The staffs play a key role in two projects at present.

(Global COE Program)
◆Digital Humanities Center for Japanese Arts and Cultures(2007-2011)

 This program aimed amassment and application infomation on global level, which based on 21th century's COE program "Kyoto Art Entertainment Innovation Research". We built up a model of integrate the humanities and science used most advanced infomation technology, international network and education and research model for Japanese arts and cultures. And, This program aimed to resume studies for Japanese arts and cultures and to cultivate scholar of humane studies.
 Professor Keiji Yano (Excutive Director and Group leader) and assistant professor Tomoki Nakaya (Group member) run Historical GIS Group.

◆Disaster Mitigation of Urban Cultural Heritage (2003-2007)

 This program is the fourth COE program at Ritsumeikan University. Disaster mitigation of cultural heritage has been a niche in the researches. Therefore, we carry out investigations into "clarifying the reality", "offering a solution", and "social practice" from the viewpoint of geography, history, civil engineering, architectonics, informatics, policy sciences, and so on.
 Professor Akihisa Yoshikoshi (a vice leader of that) and Professor Hirohumi Katahira (a member of that) have taken part in this program as a staff of the Department of Geography.

◆Kyoto Art Entertainment Innovation Research(2002-2006)

 Professor Keiji Yano (the leader of project) and almost all the teachers in the Department of Geography take part in the sub project of "Kyoto Virtual Time Space". We constract virtual time space (4D GIS from past to present) of Kyoto, a global historical city in terms of the latest technologies of urban 3D GIS and VR modeling. In particular, the cityscape in Kyoto from present to the postwar period, the Meiji and Taisho Period, and early modern period is in reproduction on the basis of MAP CUBE TM which is a high-precision urban 3D model of present Kyoto.
