Ten reasons why you choose the Department of Geography at Ritsumeikan University

1Variety and interchange

In 2005, we have 17 full-time staffs, and are one of the largest department of geography all over Japan. Therefore, you can enjoy education from staffs who have various expertise and international field experiences. In contrast, we take advantage of not too large size to activate interchange among staffs, or staffs and graduate students such as a seminar for graduate students and a workshop. We have superiority in advancing creative researches which combine the various viewpoints because a number of staffs often do collaborative reseaches.

2 COE of the 21st century

The Department of Geography at Ritsumeikan University plays a key role in COE (Center of Excellence) of the 21st century promoted by Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, "Disaster Mitigation of Urban Cultural Heritage" and "Kyoto Art Entertainment Innovation Research". We try interdisciplinary and cutting-edge researches in cooperation with researchers who belong to other departments such as Department of Japanese Literature and Department of History at Graduate School of Letters and other graduate schools such as Graduate School of Science & Engineering.

3 Researches that integrate the humanities and science

We not only emphasize a human-centred viewpoint in geographic researches, but also have excellent experts in physical geography. Specifically an approach which creates fusion of physical and human geography gives a unique viewpoint to researches on disaster, alchaeological and historical geography. You can get a technical education which covers not just field work and historical study but also mathematical/statistical modeling and informatics even in a human geographical research.

4 Unique curriculum

We has classes that give you a chance to learn the basic technique to improve your research; for instance, academic writing, field work, and processing of geographic information. Thus you can master the necessary research techniques even though you go on to our graduate school after completing a cource other than that of geography. Also, we offers such educational programs that we hold a workshop combining technical education, discussion, and group working.

5 Advanced geographic information science

We offers the best environment to use geographic information systems with both of hadware and software in Japan. You can use various GIS softwares anytime on all the educational computers at Ritsumeikan University. In addition, the Department of Geography has the GIS and Photogrammetry room and the Cartography room available for advanced processing. Researches of geographic information science are at high level across the world on the basis of these environments.

6 Informative assets

We have enormous quantity of digitised geographic information (geographic statistics, satellite imagery, and map images). Furthermore, almost all of the topographic maps published by Japanese government since the Meiji Period and plentiful collections of domestic and international maps belong in Map Library of the Department of Geography. Moreover, there are quite a few magazines and books on geography in the libralies at Ritsumeikan University.

7 Advanced international exchange

We have frequent international activities such as a presentation of researches by researchers including graduate students abroad and visitors from abroad. A graduate student gets a certain amount of financial support in case of a presentation at home and abroad. It is striking that we offer a educational program on GIS which invites a world-class researcher on the cutting edge from abroad as a guest professor. Thus you can enjoy the world's most advanced researches.

8 Expertise beneficial to your career

After completion of a graduate cource, sometimes our students are employed by universities or other research institutes. Some of them have got to be employed by private companies due to their expertises such as GIS recently. There has long been someone who aims to be a teacher at a high school or a junior high school. Such a graduate student can get a teacher's lisense which highly qualify him or her after experience of a part-time teacher outside and a research inside. Rates of getting a job with a high school or a junior high school are fairly good as compared with an undergraduate student. You can get in tough with teacheres who are the alumni due to the long history of the Department of Geography at Ritsumeikan University. In some cases, you can receive fruitful advice or support from the alumni on how to fing a job suitable for you.

9 Industry-government-academia collaboration

We also hope academic development for the good of society based on research collaboration with private companies and governmental agencies. Joint workshops and research projects have been held with Kusatsu City, Shiga Prefecture for grasping commercial situation and improvement and with various organizations in Kyoto Prefecture and Kyoto City on landscapes, crime countermeasures, disaster prevention, and traffic problems in Kyoto. For example, we are in charge of investigating a situation of "Conservation and Application of Cultural Landscapes (Forestry of Kitayama Cedars)" from the geographic and folklore point of view, entrusted to us by Agency for Cultural Affairs and the Non-Profit Foundation for Preservation of Kyoto's Cultural and Sightseeing Resources.

10 Historic City of Kyoto

Historic City of Kyoto has a so great number of heritages that it is the most suitable for you to study historical geography, landscapes, and disaster mitigation of cultural resources. Consequently, it is the optimum field to research historic geography, landscape studies, and disaster mitigation of urban cultural heritage. Moreover, Kyoto is one of the academic cities where universities and research institutes concentrates, hence it is the most appropriate for you to spend time here as a graduate student.
