The Geography Department was founded in 1935 as a part the Faculty
of Letters at Hiro-koji Campus in Kamigyouku-ku, Kyoto. In 1941,
a night-course in geography opened in the Faculty of Law and Letters.
In 1948, when Japanese universities transferred to a new system,
the department moved to the College of Letters. In 1954, a Master's
course in Geography was started in the Graduate School of Letters,
and then in 1956, a Doctor's course was also started. By this point
in time, the foundation of the present Geography Department had
been established. In 1978 following the University policy for consolidation,
the department has moved to the current location, Kinugasa Campus,
and since then various facilities have installed at the 2nd floor
of Seishin-kan Building. From 2004, the College of Letters will
be reorganized and the Geography Department will be placed into
College of Humanities, and reforms in curriculum are planned to
further effective learning.
