Biodiversity and the Environment Era | Ethical Issues of Life Theory | Ethics of Biotechnology

Progress of genome analysis in recent years, new circumstances involving biotechnology, the rapid destruction of nature . . . the organization of these and other ethical issues opens the way to new possibilities in the comprehension and expression of life and the environment. >>"Life as an Issue" 2003 (Japanese)

*Biodiversity and the Environment Era

While undertaking ecological research on the structure of land-based "hunters and gatherers" all over Japan, I was forced to reexamine the relationship between nature and humankind. In this project, we consider life and environment as one integrated unit, critically examining the "human centrism" of modern times, as we inquire into the fundamental being of environment. We invite students who have the drive and ambition to embark on the creation of new fields of research.

*Ethical Issues of Life Theory

Advances in life sciences and biotechnology are bringing about changes in our perspectives concerning life, humankind and society and politics. This theme concentrates on the rational study and rigorous practical application of joint research integrating philosophy, ethics, scientific philosophy, theoretical biology and information theory. In an era overwhelmed with the issues of life, aging, illness and death, I look forward to welcoming people who desire to contribute not only as researchers but as members of society and as human beings.

*Ethics of Biotechnology

Remarkable biotechnological advances in recent years have compelled a revision of the status of humankind in the natural world and of the methods of artificial intervention in human life and reproductive processes, in addition to a restructuring of ethical standards. My project grapples with conflicting issues of life, from the dual perspectives of scientific history and Science, Technology and Society (STS) Studies. For those of you who are in a similar frame of mind and wish to learn more about life ethics, I offer a place alongside me for an intensive and rewarding study into this new and interesting field.
