Representation
Past and Present of Theory of Sensibility and Theory of Senses | Digital Entertainment | Reconstructing the History of Art

We have Prof. YOSHIDA supervising the section, with Prof. UEMURA and Prof. SHIMADA leading each project, and aim to establish a new theory of culture and art from the angle of "representation" using the viewpoints of aesthetics, art studies, human information theory and the history of art. With the understanding and investigation of technology, history, theory and practice as our core, we approach the systematic knowledge of creation and reception arena, various contexts, and medium.

*Past and Present of Theory of Sensibility and Theory of Senses

With the foundation of aesthetics and art studies, we aim to reconstruct the theoretical framework of representation study, by accumulating critical examinations on the theory of sensibility and the theory of senses in past and present. We focus on studying visual culture and auditory culture at the beginning, then aim to research on the five senses and the complete picture of order in the end. We take advantage of already accumulated academic research on sensibility and the senses in philosophy, aesthetics, various art studies, psychology, subculture studies and media studies, and we also actively collaborate with any related study fields like sociology, biology, cultural anthropology, human engineering and medical science.

*Digital Entertainment

Based on Digital Humanities, this theme explores the field of digital entertainment that has been expanding in recent years. In particular, we aim at both the culture of "video game", in which Japan has led the world, and its nature of "play", to develop project-based research on the theme of "video games as play". This project is an attempt to build a new field, academic research on video games, by collaborating between various academic fields including information technology, aesthetics, art studies, psychology, sociology, historical science and history of industry.

*Reconstructing the History of Art

Professor Shimada will lead the projects based on the History of Art. We aim to construct a renewed Comprehensive History of Art as one of Human Studies, by synthesizing a reconsideration of art objects with existing studies in art history and, at the same time, investigating and finding new documents, as well as opening new study fields on art objects which have never been studied before. We will also efficiently apply related studies in history, culture, literature and ideologies. As the method, we investigate the existing studies thoroughly but do not become prejudiced by them, and we encourage our scholars to develop their unique ideas with full use of their own sense and sensibility.
