The Ritsumeikan-UBC Joint TESOL Program: An International Perspective
2008.02.02 Lecture by Dr. Keneth Reeder, UBC
The presentation’s aim is to consider the Joint TESOL graduate program as an example of best educational practice, and to use current research to explain the benefits of the program. We begin with a short description of the program’s history, organization and success rate. Then we review research on language immersion learning, in which complex academic content can be successfully learned by using one’s second language. These consistent successes are explained by the Interdependence Theory put forward by the noted second language learning researcher, Jim Cummins. We will conclude by thinking about how language immersion research and Interdependence Theory applies to our students’ experience in the Joint TESOL graduate program.
