International Symposium on the Teaching of English in Asia(2) by Project D4 2009.11.7 (Sat) 13:00-18:00
We have been conducting a symposium since last year the purpose of which is to learn the current situations of English teaching in Asian countries and, in doing so, to shed light upon the problems we face in the teaching of English in Japan in relation to the ongoing project of compiling an English textbook corpus of the Asian countries. Henceforth, the main theme was worded as “Locating the Teaching of English in Japan in Asian Contexts.” For the symposium last year, the first attempt of the kind, we invited lecturers from EFL countries such as China and Korea since their situations are more or less the same as Japan’s and Japan has been always compared with these two countries with respect to the proficiencies attained by the learners. The subtitle, therefore, read, “What We Can Learn from China and Korea.”
This year, in addition to one EFL country, i.e., Vietnam, we selected two ESL countries, i.e., the Philippines and Malaysia, as target countries in order to broaden our perspective since TEE, Teaching English in English, is to be taken up in senior high schools in two years’ time. We firmly believe that we can learn a great deal from what they have attained so far in those ESL countries in Asia, too. Hence, the subtitle, “What We Can Learn from Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines”
This symposium is to be conducted under the auspices of both the Graduate School of Language Education and the Information Science and International Institute of Language and Culture Studies of Ritsumeikan University and is funded by Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research for the years 2007-2009.
