Externship

Externship usually refers to the practical training students receive outside the educational institution.

The Externship Program of the Ritsumeikan University School of Law gives students the opportunity to experience legal apprenticeship at law firm, corporate legal departments, and local governments, etc.

At law schools that train legal professionals, it is necessary for students to learn the actual operation in society after acquiring the basic knowledge of legal practice in class room lectures and seminars. The purpose of the externship program is to place students in actual places of legal operationto provide them hands-on training.

To participate in the Ritsumeikan University School of Law's Externship Program, final year law school students first submit a request for apprenticeship to organizations including law firms, corporate legal departments, and local governments. Students observe and assist the work at each organization for about 2 weeks (10 weekdays). Prior to the externship, trainees attend orientation, apply for an apprenticeshi, and consult with the organizations. After finishing the program and submitting a report, before they are awarded 2 units of credits.

Students are required to take either the Legal Clinic Program or the Externship Program held within the School of Law.
