| Family law is the study of individuals
that constitute family, and is closely related to societys
view on family and gender. On the premise that students
have already acquired the basics of family law, this course
reviews actual cases of family disputes such as extramarital
relations, matrimonial property system, distribution of
property, child protection after divorce, establishment
of parent-child relationship, custody, care for the elderly,
partition of estate, wills, and surname and family register.
It investigates the backgrounds of disputes, the wills
of interested parties and the interests of those involved,
and pursues the relationships with the codes of civil
law, possible interpretation, and derived issues. Through
the study, we consider characteristics and appropriate
resolutions of family disputes. The course is basically
taught through discussion among students and instructor,
so the students must read the assigned part of the textbook
and case materials and sufficiently prepare and review
prior to class. I hope students have an interest in people,
society and gender and will become the bridge between
legal theory and practice that ensures the diversity of
families and the dignity of individuals. |

| Acquiring
problem-solving skills for labor cases |

Yoshida (Professor of Labor Law) |

| Many labor consultation cases have been accepted by prefectural labor bureaus. Many cases are related to firing, unpaid wages. There are changes such as personnel reduction and individualization of personnel management in the background. If the labor unions are active, these issues can be resolved by negotiation. However, the dropped unionized rate in recent years makes it difficult. Therefore the significance of the role of lawyers has intensified. Given the fact that most people make their living by working, dealing with labor legal issues affects the healthy development of society significantly. Labor issues arise between the parties not only with a conflict of interest but also with clear inequality of positions as employer and employee. Considering the unique characteristics of labor issues, legal professionals need to acquire the ability to solve the problems with a good sense of fairness. With reference to actual dispute cases, the two courses in labor legal issues are aimed at providing students with the skills to solve labor issues legally along with the understanding of the actual practices of labor management and the conditions of the workplace. |
