One cannot develop expertise just by studying a wide
range of specialized subjects haphazardly. Thus,
Ritsumeikan University School of Law facilitates in-depth
study for students to build a solid expertise by taking
a combination of lectures and seminars from “Advanced/Applied
Courses” of a specific program package.
Three programs, each consisting of related courses,
are offered. From the program of the student’s
choice, students are required to
(1) select one of the specialized lawyer training packages
(2 two-credit lectures of Llegal Practice/Legal Affairs
Lectures I, II and a four-credit seminar in Legal Practice/Legal
Affairs: a total of 8 credits)
and
(2)12 or more credits of coursework including at least
8 credits described in (1)the program package of the
student’s choice.
Additionally,
(3) Students are required to take a total of 26 credits
or more from Advanced/Applied Courses including Common
Courses.
In studying corporate legal services, for example,
it is more effective to take other related courses to
enhance expertise as well, such as tax law and financial
law. This enrollment system is formulated to stress
systematic study while allowing students to choose from
a wide array of courses.
On the other hand, in this increasingly diversified
society, future legal experts are required to have not
only a single specialty but multiple fields of specialization.
Unlike fixed program courses, the program package system
shown above does not force students to stick to a specific
program, but is aimed at encouraging systematic and
effective study. It is possible to take more than two
packages. Also, because the program courses are
not fixed, students are not required to choose their
specialized fields at the beginning of the study; it
is possible to decide on a specialty later in the second
year.
