Ian McNeely’s acclaimed book Reinventing Knowledge analyzes the six major institutions that have organized knowledge in the Western tradition. Each such institution formed in an epoch of profound change, redefining what constituted knowledge and reorganizing its production, preservation, and transmission. In his lecture for Ritsumeikan’s International Institute of Language and Culture Studies, Professor McNeely will talk about his new project, a global history of languages centered on Wilhelm von Humboldt. Humboldt used a worldwide correspondence network of missionaries and colonial officials to mount the first empirical and theoretical study of all the world’s languages. Professor McNeely’s project aims not only to reconstruct ideas about languages and cultures prevalent in Humboldt’s time, but also to show how knowledge about the world was produced during the transition from the institution he describes in his book as “the Republic of Letters” to the preeminent institution of the present age, the academic disciplines.
