Wilhelm von Humboldt and the World of Languages

Wilhelm von Humboldt and the World of Languages

Date : January. 28, 2011 at Kinugasa Campus, Suekawa Memorial Lecture Hall

Time : 16:30~19:00

Ian McNeely’s acclaimed book Reinventing Knowledge analyzes the six major institutions that have organized knowledge in the Western tradition. Each such institution formed in an epoch of profound change, redefining what constituted knowledge and reorganizing its production, preservation, and transmission. In his lecture for Ritsumeikan’s International Institute of Language and Culture Studies, Professor McNeely will talk about his new project, a global history of languages centered on Wilhelm von Humboldt. Humboldt used a worldwide correspondence network of missionaries and colonial officials to mount the first empirical and theoretical study of all the world’s languages. Professor McNeely’s project aims not only to reconstruct ideas about languages and cultures prevalent in Humboldt’s time, but also to show how knowledge about the world was produced during the transition from the institution he describes in his book as “the Republic of Letters” to the preeminent institution of the present age, the academic disciplines.

Stefan Noreen (Swedish Ambassador to Japan) Discusses the Swedish Environmental Policy

Stefan Noreen (Swedish Ambassador to Japan) Discusses the Swedish Environmental Policy

Date : November. 13, 2010 at Suikawa Memorial Hall, Kinugasa Campus

Time : 14:00 - 16:00

Sweden has a long tradition of environmental policy and is keen to demonstrate international leadership in the field. Already in 1991, Sweden introduced a CO2 tax system to put a price on carbon, with the view of reducing CO2 emissions and their negative impact on the environment. In 1999, the Swedish parliament adopted 16 environmental quality objectives, such as “Reduced Climate Impact” and “Rich Diversity of Animal and Plant Life”. These objectives are independently evaluated every year. The overall goal of the Government's environmental policy is to hand on to the next generation a society in which the major environmental problems facing Sweden have been solved.

Sweden has clearly demonstrated that it is possible to reduce CO2 emissions and sustain, or even increase, economic growth. Over the period 1990-2008, Swedish emissions have decreased by 12 percent, while GDP has increased by 50 percent. Total CO2 emissions are continuing to decrease, in the Government’s strive for an “eco-efficient economy” where fossil fuels are phased out and replaced by renewable sources of energy. The aim is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40 percent until 2020.
