The last class with Prof. Yukio TAKASU

The last classes by Professor Yukio Takasu for the ‘International Security’ course were held on January 25th-29th, 2022. 

Professor Takasu has been instructing the course since 2011. Interactive discussions took place through case studies on regional conflicts, attended by students with a wide range of nationalities such as the Bhutan, Cambodia, Italy, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar, Nepal and USA. Professor Takasu taught courses of ‘International Security’ and ‘International Organization’ at GSIR during these years with a wealth of professional and academic experiences

We would like to convey our deep and sincere appreciation to Professor Yukio Takasu. It was truly our honor to have him teach students at GSIR for many years.

 Professor Takasu represented Japan in many international fora, including as Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York and Vienna. He also assumed prominent positions in the United Nations Headquarters, including the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Management. Now he serves as the Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General on Human Security. Concurrently, he is active in many capacities including as the President of the NPO Human Security Forum.

Inaugural session of the University of East Anglia (UEA) – Ritsumeikan University (RU) Anglo-Japanese Global Forum: The Future of Japan’s Grand Strategy in the Asia-Pacific: Whither pro-active pacifism?

On 10 May Dr Thomas French (RU), Dr Ra Mason (UEA) and Dr Pierre Bocquillon (UEA) hosted the inaugural session of the UEA - RU Anglo-Japanese Global Forum. The UEA - RU Anglo-Japanese Global Forum is an annual event which builds links between faculty and students based at RU and UEA through engagement in student led discussion sessions. The event supports the burgeoning research and educational links between RU and UEA, which include the newly launched UEA-RU Dual Masters Degree.

The event was the first of its kind and centred on the theme of under the title of: ‘The Future of Japan’s Grand Strategy in the Asia-Pacific: Whither Pro-active Pacifism?’. The session was well attended and involved a series of student led presentations and faculty introductions followed by open discussion. The event proved exceptionally popular with the participants and plans are being made for the next year’s event.

 "Post-master's Research Student & Doctoral Research Student"  System is a system for graduates of our graduate schools to continue doing research at our facilities.

International Relations. (applications must be submitted no later than 5:00 pm on the final day of the application period if submitted in person).

As a member of APSIA (Association of Professional Schools of International Affairs), the Graduate School of International Relations has been collaborating with other member schools such as Harvard University, Yale University, National University of Singapore and American University, taking the lead in research and education in the field of International Relations in Japan.
