What are the application requirements ?
Requirements differ based on the application process. Please consult the Application Information page here for the appropriate eligibility criteria, required documents, and deadlines.
What is the minimum TOEFL®, etc., score required to apply ?

For applicants who wish to enroll in English-based program: There is no minimum requirement, but all students are required to have certain English ability to access the curriculum taught in English. Therefore, all applicants are required to submit a certificate from an English language testing agency such as TOEIC®/ TOEFL®/ IELTS® so we can evaluate your language ability.

For applicants who wish to enroll in Japanese-based program: There is no need for applicants who wish to enroll in Japanese-based program to submit a certificate from an English language testing agency. Instead, they are required to submit a certificate to prove their Japanese language ability. For details, please refer to application guidelines for each admission type.

I studied in English for my undergraduate degree, do I really need to submit TOEFL®/ etc. scores ?

For applicants who wish to enroll in English-based program: Yes. All applicants who wish to enroll in English-based program must submit scores from an internationally recognized, standardized English language proficiency test, regardless of their previous academic experience or official language in their home country.

For applicants who wish to enroll in Japanese-based program: No. There is no need for applicants who wish to enroll in Japanese program to submit a certificate from an English language testing agency.

Must I specify my desired advisor before applying ?

Yes. All applicants must choose a desired advising professor and write their name in the application form, regardless of their application type.

What is the screening procedure like ?

Screening is conducted primarily based on submitted materials. But an interview via email / telephone / etc. may be conducted if necessary.

Do you have spring semester admission ?

For applicants who wish to enroll in English-based program: Yes. The English-based program has both spring(April entry) and fall semester(September entry) admission. For details, please see the Admission Countdown page here.

For applicants who wish to enroll in Japanese-based program: Yes. The Japanese-based program has both spring (April entry) and fall semester (September entry) admissions.

Is Japanese language ability required ?

For applicants who wish to enroll in English-based program: Since lectures are conducted in English, students are not required to have Japanese language training. However, some knowledge of the Japanese language would make it easier to transition into living in Japan. Students may also take various Japanese language courses to orient them to day-to-day life in Japan and to aid interaction with other students within their research laboratories.

For applicants who wish to enroll in Japanese-based program: Yes. Students are required to possess certain Japanese ability to access the curriculum taught in Japanese. Therefore, all applicants for Japanese-based program are required to submit a certificate to prove their Japanese language ability.
