My research lies in the field of Mixed Reality (MR). MR is a technology in which the real and virtual world are combined to obtain a new visualization where 3D object exists in the real environment and can be interacted with in real time. Currently, I’m working on research on a markerless mixed reality system called PTAM. In the PTAM system, a single camera is used to track and create a 3D map using natural feature points. The goal of my research is to improve the performance of PTAM’s tracking process by using a stereo video see-through head mounted display instead of the single hand-held camera.

The principal theme of my research is on localization or positioning of wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. The idea behind this advanced technology is to discover 2D or 3D positions of sensor nodes in a network, and it has become popular for many location-aware applications as a replacement of Global Positioning System (GPS), since GPS does not work well for indoor environments and is expensive in terms of cost and energy consumption. I have been conducting theoretical and experimental research to propose an effective positioning technique which consumes less power and cost while providing more precise location information using Zigbee modules under the supervision of my respectful professor.
Why did you choose to study at Ritsumeikan University?
I strongly convinced myself that by coming here, I could understand effective ways and methods to focus on a principal research problem, identify the best solutions to resolve the problem, find approaches to determine research goals, and develop creative ideas that will become reality in line with practical research experiments. All the courses offered in the university follow a student-based approach with effective seminars, presentations and cooperative projects, which help to develop motivation, rhetorical thinking, understanding of perspective views, and more importantly, on problem solving as a team. As a lecturer in my country, I believe that I will be able to not only contribute these knowledge and experiences to my students, but also help to develop academic and research sectors of Myanmar. Research experiences gained from the university will also have a great impact on my career development and further studies.

My research theme is in the areas of emotion, learning, education, and soft computing. The objective of my research is fundamentally to investigate the role of emotion in learning. Theoretically emotion plays an important role in decision making and controls cognition. I am trying to analyze and to provide empirical evidence for student emotion profiles that correlate to their learning character. I have conducted a literature review that will provide the theoretical background of my study and preliminary analysis that will provide initial empirical evidence of the link between emotion and cognition. With the information I obtain, tailored teaching methods and material can be developed to enhance learning in the hope that students’ learning will be more successful.

The combination of the experience of a multicultural ambience with a Japanese ambience. The first time I came to Ritsumeikan I wasn’t able to communicate in fluent Japanese, but that wasn’t a big problem to meet and share special moments with different people. Mainly communicating in English, I was able to make special friends coming from different places such as Rwanda, Malaysia, and Vietnam. But in the case of Japanese students in particular with my lab co-members, when I finished my first research, before I had to go back to my country for some time, they prepared for me a farewell party and a special video in which they included pictures and messages that made me realize that even though my Japanese wasn’t good, it was possible for me to make friends and have a good time.

My research is about Topological Quantum Computation (TQC). Many of you might be already familiar with the word “quantum computer” nowadays. In order to realize a quantum computer, you need to have fault-tolerant quantum gates for example a quantum gate with a very low operational error rate. Therefore, TQC is precisely a new and different approach and a possible way to have fault-tolerant quantum gates. The objective and main idea of my research is to improve optimization in respect to quantum cost reduction for TQC.

A. What I do really appreciate and enjoy more about Ritsumeikan besides it being a very peaceful place to study with good facilities and friendly environment, is that the cafeteria serves some Halal food for Muslims. As a Muslim we have some restrictions on our foods and so it is sometimes difficult for us to enjoy our meals in a foreign land but you do not have to worry about such a problem here. I believe not so many Universities worldwide provide such consideration for our dietary restrictions but I am proud to say Ritsumeikan does.

My research theme, “MEETING SUPPORT INTERFACE WITH INTEGRATED SHARED AND INDIVIDUAL SPACES”, is focused on how to use advanced technology in order to solve problems often encountered during meetings, which constitute 20-40% of the time of any professional. The suggested solution is based on using tablets to create a collaborative space for meeting members, where they can brainstorm and collaborate on finding solutions and make decisions without depriving themselves of their privacy through the creation of a private/individual space that coexists within the shared space.

I had a class where we had to remotely collaborate on a project with some students in Tomsk, Russia with our client from Switzerland. We were a team of 5 people from 5 different countries. We learned how to work together no matter what our differences were and got all the means and support we needed from Ritsumeikan such as free access to a conference room, etc. We managed to finish the job by the deadline. That was my first very enriching global experience.
I believe that such an experience is only possible at a university like Ritsumeikan.
