New Year's Eve

India is a country that is known to be colourful and is famous for its culture, traditions and customs. Being born and brought up in a typical Indian joint family, festivals have always been a big part of my life and something me and my siblings as well as other family relatives look forward to. As I am an Indian student who aspires to study in Japan in the possible future, I've noticed the similar cultures and family practices of India and Japan. Since India is a diverse country with many languages, festivals, religions and traditions, many people across the country spend these days in very distinct ways.

People in all parts of India dress colourfully and indulge in fun filled activities such as playing games, dancing, and singing. They greet and wish each other Happy New Year. Exchanging messages and gifts is part and parcel of the New Year celebrations. The media also covers many New Year events for most of the day and the night clubs, movie theatres, restaurants and amusement parks are usually filled with people of all ages.

Larger cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai organize live concerts which are attended by Bollywood stars and other well-known personalities and many large crowds, especially the students who are living away from their families gather to attend such shows. The fun filled occasion is considered a great opportunity to get closer to the loved ones in your life and to revive contact with lost friends.

Those few, like me and my family, who decide to stay indoors, plan out our activities for the night and watch famous New Year shows for entertainment and fun. The age-old tradition of planning new resolutions for the coming year is a common sight. New years' eve in my family involves not only this, but barbeque on the terrace along with music and tambola (an Indian game) as well. The food is one of the most important things and a lavish menu is always cooked. We always use the karaoke machine to sing old songs too. A few of the most popular resolutions made by cousins and other members of my family last year included losing weight, developing good habits, and working hard etc. My New Year resolution this time will be to score more than 90% on my board exams and strive to make my dream of studying in Japan true. What's yours?
