The Saionji Collection

Ritsumeikan traces its roots to Prince Saionji Kinmochi's private academy of the same name, established in 1869. It was officially founded in 1900 by his protege, Kojuro Nakagawa, as the Kyoto Hosei Gakko (Kyoto School of Law and Politics), later to take on the name "Ritsumeikan" in 1905.
The Saionji Collection contains items passed down from the Saoinji family, Prince Saionji Kinmochi's private collection, items donated to him, and items purchased and collected at a later date by Ritsumeikan.
In addition to books and serial publications, the collection also contains writings such as letters.
