NDC:Nippon Decimal Classification

NDC:Nippon Decimal Classification

In the library, books are arranged in the order of the classification number. The classification number is classified by the contents of the book for your convenience to find the book which matches with your purpose from a lot of materials in the library, and the place has been decided for most materials. By doing so, books which have the same or similar contents and also books which are related are arranged and placed nearby. Once you understand the system of decimal classification, search for books/materials will be much faster and easier.

The Japan Decimal Classification method (NDC) classifies all materials into 3 digit numbers from "000" to "999"out of 1,000 items based on the content of the books. However, due to its insufficiency to have only 1,000 items, the classification item is set as following "."

Classification number is just for classifying the books, thus it is nothing but a number. It is one of the methods in consideration of how to arrange the books which became standard for classifying books. Not only many Japanese libraries adopted this system but also this university adopted the NDC 8th edition since 1984.

Classification search with NDC index

NDC, a standard for classifying books in the library, is constituted by the main table, has written standard or rule of classification, and index (or this can be also relative index) which makes it possible to find the classification number from the keywords or certain field. Recent NDC 9th edition has become a separate book for index.

Items in the index are listed in the order of the Japanese syllabary. The corresponding classification number for each item is written next to it. If this index is used, the field/subject area of the book under search (and its corresponding classification number) can be easily identified.

It is also possible to search by "classification number" on the search screen of the RUNNERS book catalog. If you enter a 3 digit classification number a list of results will be displayed online. Search by classification number and find the book you seek!
