This section was created in 2004 as a result of several departmental reconfigurations and name changes.
The Section of Civil Engineering, Environmental Systems Engineering and Architecture Design (formerly the Department of Construction and Environmental Systems) teaches students how to look for solutions to the problems faced by human society and to create urban environments and living environments designed for a new era.
The three fields of civil engineering, environmental systems engineering, and architecture and urban design all address issues pertaining to the environment and urban spaces, and have a lot in common in terms of research and education. These three departments have therefore been integrated within a single administrative unit within the university, the Section of Civil Engineering, Environmental Systems Engineering and Architecture Design.
Disaster Prevention SRC Opens
Ritsumeikan applied to conduct an Integrated Large-Scale Sensor System and Robust Network Construction Project for Disaster Prevention and Safety under the 2004 High-Tech Research Center Project of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and we are pleased to announce that the application was approved.
The Disaster Prevention Systems Research Center (SRC) is the core facility for this project. The goal of this project is to facilitate the development of effective disaster prevention systems and technologies by linking researchers involved in disaster prevention, information technologies, and sensor systems. It also strongly promotes industry government academic partnerships in these fields.

The new Department of Civil Engineering (current freshmen and sophomores) is the successor to the former Department of Civil Engineering (juniors and higher). A distinction is made between old and new departments because of a change that has been made in the Japanese name of the department. The new department's goal is the creation, maintenance, and management of urban systems that provide safety against disasters, and comfortable living spaces.
The curriculum of this department was revised during academic year 2004. It integrates the results of various sciences and aims to preserve the environment while creating spaces for human activity.
