| introduction | In our laboratory, we are studying about the ultimate strength of plate girders; and we focus on the application of the strength with material plasticity being taken into consideration to Japanese design specifications. One of the design methods take the material plasticity into consideration is ALFD (Alternate Load Factor Design) method which has been adopted in the American specifications. However, Japanese Specifications for Highway Bridges does not take material plasticity into account explicitly, and allows only the design method considering the strength up to the elastic limit. Research topics that we have been focusing on are as follows.
