Autonomous systems are
proliferating, fueled by lower hardware costs, and rapid advances in AI/ML models
that support analytics, prediction and optimization. However, these
applications still exhibit brittle, and even unsafe behaviors in the face of
dynamism (in underlying models, data and context), as well as through
yet-unseen emergent behaviors. Unfortunately, the rush to deploy these
technologies poses serious challenges for safe and predictable behavior,
particularly when dealing with the inherent runtime dynamism and emergent
behaviors faced by autonomous systems. This requires a fundamental change
from classical “static” computing to a new paradigm that deploys
computational cognitive intelligence (CCI) principles that can learn and
evolve at runtime. The CCI paradigm empowers systems to be adaptable and
evolvable by exploiting biologically inspired cognitive intelligence
principles. Furthermore, there is
a critical need to verify system properties at runtime so that dynamic and
emergent behaviors can be assessed for system safety. In this talk I will give an overview
of the CCI paradigm and outline our early efforts at runtime verification
strategies for ensuring system safety. |
