Open Access (OA) means publishing scholarly articles on the web and making them available to anyone for free. Due to the issue of e-journals, etc., it is spreading rapidly on a global scale, and according to a survey conducted in 2017, about 30% of global articles have been converted to OA .

OA is roughly divided into two types, called green OA and gold OA. Green OA is an OA method that self-archives contents such as articles in university and national repositories such as R-Cube. The other type of Gold OA is an OA method that allows anyone to access publishers' journals and the like free of charge. A typical gold OA model is the author-payment model, in which the author pays the article processing charge (APC) to turn the paper into an OA.

There are several benefits to making articles OA. (1) The research results are widely returned to society, (2) the possibility of creating various innovations beyond the field of research increases, and (3) the possibility of citing articles also increases for individual researchers.

【Article Processing Charge】

Article Processing Charge (APC) is the cost required to make a article published in a journal accessible to anyone for free. Open access to articles has many advantages, but in the case of author-payment type OA, authors generally need to pay APCs of tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of yen to publishers. For faculty members, there are journals where the publication charge is free or discounted.

In recent years, there have been journals that publish articles without sufficient peer review in order to obtain an APC. These journals are called predatory journals, etc., and are also a problem in Japan. If a article is published in such a journal, it will not only hurt your career and credibility as a researcher, but also your university's credibility.

Here are some tips to help you determine the quality of your journal. If you have any questions, please contact the reference counter.

(1)Impact Factor

Impact Factor is a measure of how much a journal article has been cited over a period of time. The University has a contract with Web of Science, and you can check the impact factors of about 12,000 titles that have been recorded. A journal that has an impact factor can be judged to be a journal with a certain evaluation, and can be used as a reference when judging the quality of a journal.

(2)PubMed(MEDLINE)

A database of bibliographic information, including the medical bibliographic database "MEDLINE" operated by the United States National Library of Medicine (NLM). MEDLINE will include journals that have been reviewed and will be helpful in determining the quality of journals. To find out if a journal has been featured on MEDLINE, search for the journal title or ISSN in the NLM Catalog. If the search result shows "Currently indexed for MEDLINE", it can be determined that the journal has been registered.

(3)DOAJ(Directory of Open Access Journals)

A database managed by Lund University in Sweden, which contains high quality peer-reviewed OA journals. You can search the journal title or ISSN on the DOAJ website to check whether the journal is included in DOAJ.

(4)Publishing industry associations

There are industry associations related to article publishing, such as the COPE(Committee on Publication Ethics), which engages in activities related to the publication standards of articles, and the OASPA(Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association), which promotes open access publishing. Whether or not a publisher is a member of these trade associations can help you determine the quality of your journal.

(5)Others

Publishers who publish predatory journals may post false information on their websites, but we recommend that you review the following before submitting your paper:

  • Are the latest articles found in the journal?
  • Are there any doubts about the publisher's contact information or peer review method?
  • Are there editorial committees and reliable researchers participating?
