Purpose of Exhibition

WORLD PRESS PHOTO is a photo exhibition that includes about 150 photographs that have won awards in the World Press Photo Contest. The exhibition is held every year by the Netherlands-based World Press Photo foundation, with 2015 marking its 58th anniversary. Starting from Amsterdam in the Netherlands, this global-scale photo exhibition will be held at about 100 places around the world. Ritsumeikan University has been holding this exhibition every year since 1995. All of the exhibited photographs, which showcase current global events, were taken by photographers with outstanding news coverage ability and the best technology available in order to create deeply moving depictions of reality. Seventy years have passed since the end of World War II, and yet many people in various places around the world are still exposed to conflicts and violence every day. Some of the photographs themselves were taken in life-threatening situations. With this in mind, we would like to invite you to visit WORLD PRESS PHOTO 15 to have the chance to contemplate the current situation of the world 70 years after the war and to think about peace once more.

World Press Photo Contest

The World Press Photo Contest is an international photo contest for newsworthy photographs taken during the previous year, and is open to any professional photographer. This year’s photographs were selected from 97,912 submissions from 131 different countries and regions. The contest has eight categories incorporating topics such as General News, Contemporary Issues, Spot News, Sports, and Nature. Each category has two sections: Single and Story. The Single section uses only a single photo whereas Story uses multiple photographs, with each being eligible for first, second, and third prizes. Furthermore, one grand prize winner for the World Press Photo of the Year is selected from the winning photographs. The World Press Photo of the Year, awarded to the photograph that best encapsulates the spirit of photojournalism and displays superior photographic expression, is considered the most prestigious award for photojournalism in the world.
