Director's MessageToward the Realization of Well-being
in the Future

By 2050, it is estimated that the number of centenarians (people over 100 years old) will reach about 500,000, and Japan's population will be 100 million, about 20 million fewer than at present. This demographic change brings to light issues such as the declining birthrate, aging population, shrinking working population, and problems with medical and social security costs. Meanwhile, Society 5.0 has been proposed as a new social direction.
This is a vision of a future society that combines cyberspace and physical space to achieve both economic development and solutions to social issues.
Robotics, artificial intelligence, big data, and information and communication technologies are bringing about major changes in our daily lives and social systems.
These transformations also affect people's values and behaviors, and as part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the realization of health and well-being is becoming increasingly important.

Ritsumeikan University has a vision for 2030: "More Freedom to Take on Challenges. Through comprehensive research and education, we aim to create innovation, contribute to society, and become a next-generation research university. As part of this vision, Ritsumeikan University has over 20 years of experience in research center activities and COI programs. And in 2022, the Institute of Advanced Research for Sport and Health Science, Ritsumeikan University was established.

This institute, with researchers belonging to a wide range of fields, aims to realize Well-being. The three pillars of research are "realization of health and longevity," "improvement of QOL through sports," and "realization of the health of the community and society.
We are building an innovation cycle from basic research to development, demonstration, and social implementation. We pursue results not only from an academic perspective, but also through cooperation with a wide range of stakeholders, including industry-government-private sector partnerships. Researchers in various fields collaborate to promote the process from basic research to social implementation. In addition, we collaborate with the Active Life Co-Creation Consortium. It also functions as part of an interdisciplinary co-creation research platform that fuses the wisdom of industry, academia, government, and local communities.

We will continue to fulfill our mission as a comprehensive research institute and contribute to the realization of a sustainable society. We look forward to your continued support and encouragement.
