What is the amorphous?
The amorphous is that having no definite shape or features, or without clear definition. It shows the solid which exists in the condition that the atoms are disturbed, while the general steel material is that atoms range neatly in a row.
What is difference from general steel material?
Amorphous alloy has the excellent mechanical property compared with general steel materials. The tensile strength of general steel material is about 400~1000MPa, while that of amorphous alloy is more than 2000MPa. In short, in case of the amorphous alloy, it is sufficient at the half plate thickness in order to keep the same strength.
What is the reason why amorphous alloy is not used generally?
Amorphous alloy has a big problem. It needs to cool the liquid metal quickly in order to produce the solid under the condition atoms are disturbed. So when we try to produce the thick material, the inside of material cannot be cooled quickly even though the surface can be cooled. Therefore, it is just possible that we produce only thin material such as a hair.
What should we do?
We can make the thick things by superimposing the thin things. So in this laboratory, we make the composite material by bonding the thin films of amorphous, and study about its fatigue and mechanic property. We can make the very strong material by superimposing the thin material repeatedly. We are sure that the composite material is used as mechanic component in the close future
