I was born and grew up in Mizusawa, Iwate (notheastern Japan).
I came to Kyoto in 1978 to attend Kyoto University, majoring in philosophy. I studied under the supervision of the late Professor Yoshinobu Kiso. I took a M. A. degree in Philosophy from Kyoto University in 1984. The subject of my master's thesis was David Hume's philosophy of knowledge, espesicially his scepticism concerning sense-perception.
I got married in 1987 and had a daughter in 1989. I got a job at Ritsumeikan in that year, too.
In 1992-93, I took a year's leave and stayed in Québec as visiting scholar at l'Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières. My wife and daughter were there with me. We greatly loved the country and its people.
Now we live in Kitashirakawa, about halfway between Ginkakuji and Shisendo.
