Communicate in English AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE!

 

We understand that this will not be easy but we know that one of your most important goals is to improve your English language ability.

Note that your effort and attitude to speaking in English is reflected in your participation grade.

Assessment

Your attendance is very important to the success of your program, and the instructor will always take attendance at the start of each class.

Attendance – Regular attendance is expected. The minimum attendance to complete your program is two-thirds. You cannot miss more than 5 classes.

Participation – Refers to the EFFORT you are putting into your work. High participation marks go to participants who:     

• have a good attendance record        
• are on time at the start of class       
  
• are prepared for class discussion and activities        
• consistently volunteer contributions to discussions and group work        
• are pro-active in their contact assignments        
• make an effort to use English        
• listen to others       
• make a visible effort to improve on their initial level of knowledge and ability.

 

Attendance & Punctuality

Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class. Remember, regular attendance is expected. All students must meet the two-thirds participation requirement to finish their courses.

• In each course, you cannot miss more than 5 classes.  
• If you miss 2 classes, you will get an oral warning from your instructor.  
• If you miss 4 classes, you will get a FINAL oral warning by your instructor. 

Attendance is part of your grade. If you miss classes, it will lower your grade. If you must miss a class, please contact your instructor before the class. Also remember that you are responsible for any information you miss if you are absent.

COUNTING ABSENCES & LATENESS 

If you arrive less than 30 minutes after class has begun, then you are considered “Late.” Please note 3 “Lates”=1 absence.

Educational Tips

Here are a few tips that can help you get the most out of your education:

• Take responsibility for your own education.
• Be an active participant in the educational process: ask questions, express your ideas, seek out opportunities to learn.
• Get to know your instructors.
• Go to class regularly, on time and alert.
• Keep an open mind; we often learn the most from those with opposing opinions.
• Make friends with classmates who have backgrounds different from your own.
• Take advantage of opportunities to supplement your coursework.
• Use the multitude of resources available at BKC.
