Paying Attention To How You Read

Let's check your reading strategies!

Questions below ask what you do when you read in English. Read the questions and give an answer. Use the 1-5 scale below from never (1) to always (5). Write a score for each question.

Before reading,

Q1 Do you look at the title and pictures in order to figure out what the text is about?

Q2 Do you look through the whole text before you start reading?

While reading,

Q3 Do you concentrate on your reading?

Q4 Do You try to form an image of what you are reading in your mind?

Q5 Do you ask yourself questions in order to check your understanding?

Q6 Do you try to understand what parts of the text are important?

Q7 Do you try to guess what might come next in the text?

Q8 Do you try to have an opinion about the text you are reading?

Q9 Do you try to use what you already know about the text in order to understand it?

Q10 Do you try to guess the meaning of unfamiliar words?

Q11 Do you try to understand how the text is organized?

Q12 When you look up new words in a dictionary, do you check how they should be used in a sentence?

Q13 Do you underline/circle the important parts of the text?

Q14 Do you try to find keywords, which are crucial in understanding the text?

Q15 Do you control your reading speed depending on the text you read?

After reading,

Q16 Do you summarize what you read?

Q17 Do you think about what you read by trying to find a connection with your experience / opinion /
        knowledge?

Q18 Do you discuss what you read with your friends?

Q19 Do you review the new vocabulary and expressions you have learned?

Q20 Do you think about the way you read?

Add all the scores.

How many points did you get?

The higher the score, the better reader you are.
