Study Data Science

In an age when people, goods, and organizations are connected to the network, the accumulated data has been called “the oil of the 21st century” and is a source of innovation.

Collecting a large amount of data is of little value in itself, but being able to utilize that data is of great significance.

『Data Science』
Data science is a basic knowledge requirement for people living in the 21st century.

We are launching a new educational program, the “Data Science+R Program” to enable students to acquire knowledge and skills related to AI and data science.

The program consists of two levels, the “Basic” level during which students acquire the basic knowledge and skills to utilize mathematics, data science, and AI; and the “Applied Basic” level during which students acquire the basic skills to apply their knowledge to their own fields of specialty.

We aim to nurture “innovative and fledgling human resources” who can find new value through interaction between specialized fields and data science.

CURRICULUM

What is the Data Science +R Program?

Ritsumeikan University's “Data Science +R Program” is a mathematical, data science, and AI education program.
This program will foster the knowledge and skills in mathematics, data science, and AI, which are considered the basic knowledge (the so-called “reading, writing, and arithmetic”) of digital society, as well as the basic skills required to design new social systems, products, and services, and the skills necessary to create a sustainable society.

Program Structure

The eleven courses that make up the “Data Science +R Program” can be taken from student’s first-year regardless of their prior knowledge or background in the arts or sciences and allow students to learn in stages.

  • Basic Level - Basic Knowledge of Digital Society -
  • Applied Basic Level - Acquisition of Practical Knowledge and Skills -

Upon successful completion of the program, students will receive an Open Badge as proof of completion.

What is Open Badge?
  • Basic
  • Applied Basic

- Acquisition of Basic Knowledge of Digital Society -

In the Data Science +R Program (Basic), students acquire knowledge and skills related to AI and data science, which are considered the basic knowledge (the so-called “reading, writing, and arithmetic”) of digital society.

Completion Requirements

Students earn credits for the courses*1 offered in their college that are included in the program.
*1 For detailed completion requirements, please refer to the “Study Handbook” distributed by your college.

- Acquisition of Practical Knowledge and Skills -

In digital society going forward, it is expected that students will acquire basic mathematical knowledge and the ability to connect and design across disciplines, regardless of their field of specialization.
The Data Science +R Program (Applied Basics) fosters talent who can apply and utilize knowledge of mathematics, data science, and AI in various specialized fields.

PROGRAM CONTENT

  • No Prior Knowledge Required

Each person's prior mathematical and programming knowledge differs.

The Data Science+R Program is designed so that all students can learn the basics whether they have a background in the sciences or in the humanities.

Students who are uncertain about taking a course can feel assured that they will be able to acquire the knowledge they wish to without difficulty.

  • Skills You Will Acquire

The Data Science+R program is designed to help students apply their knowledge and skills in mathematics, data science, and AI to their field of specialization.

Students will expand and develop their learning going back and forth between the program and their own major field of specialization.

    Skills Students Will Acquire

    • Data analysis and expression skills
    • programming skills
    • AI application skills
    • information ethics
    • management skills
  • A New Educational Model*Applied Basic level only

The DX (Digital Transformation) Platform for Tertiary Education, “Schoo Swing” has been introduced to provide detailed support to all students.

The on-demand course materials for each class include a section-by-section confirmation test and interactive lessons that allow students to post reactions and comments in the videos.

It is a new educational model that allows students to watch the videos multiple times, anytime, anywhere, and also receive one-on-one instruction.

FAQ

    • Data Science+R is a new educational program that enables students to acquire knowledge and skills in AI and data science. Courses are offered with the aim of empowering students to apply knowledge and skills related to mathematics, data science, and AI to their own field of specialization, and for them to evolve and develop their learning through going back and forth between their field of specialization and data science.
    • Knowledge and skills related to mathematics, data science, and AI, also known as the “reading, writing, and arithmetic” of today's digital society, are the basic knowledge for success in all areas of society, regardless of whether in the humanities or the sciences.
Ritsumeikan University, in its R2030 Ritsumeikan Academy Vision and Challenge Design, states that in light of the fact that digital technology continues to spread at an increasingly rapid pace, we need to anticipate that data science and digital technology will become essential for general-purpose intellectual production skills, regardless of the field. Through this program, we aim to cultivate human resources who will be sought after by society.
    • The program consists of two levels, the “Basic” level during which students acquire the basic knowledge and skills to utilize mathematics, data science, and AI; and the “Applied Basic” level during which students acquire the basic skills to apply their knowledge to their own specialized fields.
Since the program is structured so students systematically acquire knowledge and skills related to mathematics, data science, and AI, students are encouraged to take both the “Basic” level and the “Applied Basic” level courses.
