This department is working with other disciplines to seek solutions to the global environmental problems being faced in the 21st century in an environment of open engineering. Environmental Systems Engineering aims to create new and useful activity spaces.

Addressing these kinds of issues requires diverse perspectives that break from conventional constraints and go beyond the frameworks of existing disciplines and scientific frameworks. Experts must be able to look multilaterally and comprehensively at the relationship between human beings and nature or society from a broad perspective. Since the global environment is made up of complex systems, we must approach the problems of the environment with an understanding of those underlying systems. Solving those problems will require the combination and integration of the academic findings and technological methods of many disciplines. In the Department of Environmental Systems Engineering, students gain a broad base of scientific knowledge while learning engineering analysis methods and systemization technologies. Also, by studying these topics in conjunction with social sciences such as environmental economics, students can learn how to create the best social environments. Students are encouraged to take the lead in creating new environments.

Many graduates of this department are active in occupations in their fields of specialty, and active partnerships have developed between alumni and the university, as well as between groups of alumni. About half of graduates proceed to graduate school where they acquire specialized research skills.
