Research Themes at RCS

1Development of the Regional Circular Social System

RCS has already started to collaborate with Huzhou City and Zhejiang University in implementing a pilot scheme for building the circular economy in China. This is based on the Memorandum of Understanding signed between IR3S (the Integrated Research System for Sustainability Science) and the two organizations respectively.

2Studies of Economic Impact of Climate Change Abatement Measures

The possible impacts of the measures to mitigate climate change, including environmental taxes, will be numerically explored through models based on Input-Output analysis.

3Evaluation of the Adaptation Measures

By utilizing the methodologies of mathematical finance, we aim to explore exploring how and to what extent financial goods like “Weather Derivatives” could be effective means to mitigate the negative impact of and thus adaptation to climate change.

4International Framework of Post-Kyoto Protocol

We will consider and suggest how the post-Kyoto protocol international framework could be effective, with regard to the concept of “Common, but differential responsibilities” as the guiding principle.

5Development and Cost and Effect Analysis of Technologies to Reduce GHGs (green house gases) Discharge

The costs and effects of developing various technologies will be numerically explored, and based on the result of this we will suggest new technological innovation strategies for curbing the damage caused by climate change.

6Integrated Water Resource Management and Water Security

We aim to develop systems for Integrated Water Resource Management System that are appropriate for urban space of the Asia-Pacific region, and to suggest policy options to achieve “water security” in the region

7The Role of Art and Culture in Building Sustainable Society

Key factors for sustainability will be explored in the increasingly intertwined culture and economy in post-industrial society, and we will suggest cultural policies required for achieving sustainable society.
