Graduate School Policy

Ritsumeikan University Graduate School of Letters has established the following goals, admission policy, curriculum policy, and diploma policy.

Principle and Goal

As a comprehensive center to advance knowledge of humanities, the Graduate School of Letters aims to provide a curriculum capable of offering students the knowledge required to develop new fields of study, and to meet contemporary social demands for humanities research.

Master’s Program

The Master’s Program in the Graduate School of Letters aims to nurture researchers at the forefront of the academic world and highly skilled professionals who are active in society. This will be affected by applying the knowledge and experience they have gained through their research, and by conducting specialized and international research in various fields of the humanities.

1. Major in Humanities

In the Research Course in this major, students will acquire the basic knowledge necessary to become researchers and will be trained to enter the doctoral course after completion of the course. In its Exploratory Course, on the other hand, students are trained to have knowledge, skills, and experience to meet the demands of society and to deal with a wide variety of contemporary issues.

2. Major in Informatics of Behavior and Cultures

In the Research Course in this major integrating the humanities and information in an organic manner, students will acquire the basic knowledge necessary to become researchers in each specialized field of the humanities and informatics and will be trained to enter the doctoral course after completion of the course. In its ExploratoryExploratory Course, students are trained to have knowledge, skills, and experience that meet the demands of society, and to be able to deal with various problems of today.

Doctoral Program

The Doctoral Program in the Graduate School of Letters aims to develop researchers at the forefront of the academic world and advanced professionals who are active in society. This will be affected by applying the knowledge and experience they have gained through their research, and by conducting specialized and international research in various fields of the humanities.

1. Major in Humanities

The Doctoral Course in Humanities aims to foster highly skilled professionals who have advanced knowledge of various specialized fields in the humanities, as well as skills in reading and understanding literature, research, language, and collecting and analyzing materials. They will also be capable of interdisciplinary research and joint research in the social and natural sciences and have the ability to actively communicate the results of their research to society. The Department of Behavioral and Cultural Informatics aims to nurture human resources to become advanced specialists who can actively communicate the results of their research to society.

2. Major in Informatics of Behavior and Cultures

The Doctoral Course in Informatics of Behavior and Cultures aims to develop highly skilled professionals with advanced knowledge in the humanities and informatics, as well as skills in reading and understanding literature, research, language, data collection, analysis, and fieldwork. They will also be able to conduct interdisciplinary research and joint research in the social and natural sciences, as well as actively communicate the results of their research to society. The objective of the program is to develop highly skilled professionals who are capable of interdisciplinary research and joint research in social and natural science fields, and who can actively communicate the results of such research to society through the use of information technology.

Diploma Policy

Master’s Program

The abilities that graduate students must acquire upon completion of their studies (=educational objectives) are defined by the "Human Resource Development Objective." The acquisition of credits as stipulated in the Graduate School Regulations, and successful completion of the thesis examination, are regarded as achievement of the educational objectives, and a Master's degree is awarded.

The educational objectives are as follows:

  1. Understanding the significance of the humanities in modern society (interest and motivation)
  2. Acquiring the reading comprehension, writing, and presentation skills necessary for studying and conducting research in the humanities (skills and attitude)
  3. Acquiring the critical and logical thinking skills that are essential for studying the humanities and conducting research (thinking and understanding)
  4. Acquiring the latest research methods and knowledge in accordance with the specialization of each major (knowledge and skills)
  5. Possessing an interdisciplinary and international perspective (attitude and judgment)

The Master's thesis will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  1. Academic significance, originality, and appropriateness
  2. Appropriateness of handling of literature and materials and research methods
  3. Clarity and coherence of the thesis
  4. Academic contribution to various issues in the humanities.

The following criteria will be used to evaluate Master's theses.

  1. Preparation of a bibliography, catalog, report, catalog, database, etc., and its commentary and solution
    1. Academic ingenuity and originality
    2. Academic and social significance of the research theme
    3. Appropriate handling of literature, materials, research reports, etc.
    4. Contribution in an advanced professional field
  2. Preparation of three-dimensional scholarly products, etc., and their commentaries and explanations
    1. Academic ingenuity and originality
    2. Academic and social significance of the research theme
    3. Completeness of the deliverables
    4. Contribution to the profession
  3. Translation, translation notes, etc., and commentary/analysis
    1. Academic ingenuity and originality
    2. Academic and social significance of the research theme
    3. Accurate translation of primary sources and appropriateness of translation notes
    4. Contribution in advanced professional positions
  4. Instructional materials and their commentaries and solutions in the field of education

    3. Appropriateness of the handling of literature, materials, and research reports used as teaching materials

Doctoral Program

The abilities that graduate students must acquire upon completion of their studies (=educational objectives) are defined by the "Human Resource Development Objective." The doctoral degree is conferred upon completion of the educational goals by earning the credits stipulated in the Graduate School Regulations by passing the dissertation examination.

The educational objectives are as follows:

  1. Understanding the significance of the humanities in modern society (interest and motivation)
  2. Acquiring advanced reading comprehension, writing, and presentation skills necessary for studying and conducting research in the humanities (skills and attitude)
  3. Acquiring advanced research methods and knowledge tailored to the specialization of each major (knowledge and skills)
  4. Being able to conduct original analysis and debate, and conduct advanced research and debate that contributes to the academic community (knowledge and expression)
  5. Being able to conduct research and act from an interdisciplinary and international perspective (attitude and judgment)

The doctoral dissertation will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  1. Academic ingenuity and originality
  2. Academic contribution to the academic community
  3. Academic significance and appropriateness of the research theme
  4. Appropriateness of the treatment of previous research
  5. Appropriateness of the handling of literature, materials, surveys, etc.
  6. Systematicity of the paper
  7. Clarity, coherence, and consistency of the thesis
  8. Appropriateness of expression and notation

Curriculum Policy (Educational Programs)

Master’s Program

In the Graduate School of Letters, in order to achieve the above "Educational Goals," graduate students in the Master's Course will study in the "Exploratory Subjects", "Specialized Subjects", and "Special Research Subjects".

In order to achieve "Educational Goals" (1), (2), and (3), students will study in the "Exploratory Subjects". In the Exploratory Subjects, students will study the humanities in an advanced, advanced, and cross-disciplinary manner, and cultivate diverse views and perspectives in the humanities.

The "Exploratory Subjects" include courses that enable students to obtain specialized licenses and to play an active role in a wide range of educational fields, courses that cultivate language skills for international activities by making use of specialized knowledge, and courses that build career awareness after completion of the program.

To achieve "Educational Goals" (4) and (5), students will study in "Specialized Subjects" and "Special Research Subjects. In the "Specialized Subjects," students will study through lectures, literature reading, and practical training to acquire the latest research and knowledge in their respective fields and to gain an interdisciplinary and international perspective. In the "Special Research Subjects," students receive research guidance and engage in research activities toward writing their Master's thesis.

Doctoral Program

In the Graduate School of Letters, in order to achieve the above "Educational Goals," graduate students in the Doctoral Course study in "Special Research Subjects.

In "Special Research Subjects," students engage in research activities while receiving detailed guidance from their supervisors in order to acquire and cultivate the knowledge and abilities that will serve as a foundation for promoting research.

Admission Policy (Desired Applicants)

Master’s Program

The Master's Course accepts students who have all of the following, based on the educational objectives

  1. Those who are willing to cultivate a deep knowledge of culture and a rich imagination.
  2. Those who have knowledge of the humanities at the level of a bachelor's degree.
  3. Those who have a broad perspective and a clear awareness of the issues involved in clarifying various problems in the humanities.
Research Course
In addition to (1), (2), and (3) above, the Research Course accepts students with the following qualifications:
  • Those who actively aim to acquire critical and logical thinking skills, language skills, and presentation skills that are indispensable for being active in academic research and various fields of society (for the Department of Behavioral Culture and Information Studies, this includes acquisition of knowledge and skills in informatics).
    (For the Department of Behavioral Culture and Information Studies, this includes the acquisition of knowledge and skills in informatics.
Exploratory Course
In addition to (1), (2), and (3) above, the Exploration Course accepts students who have the following:
  • Those who actively aim to acquire critical and logical thinking skills, language skills, and presentation skills, which are indispensable for being active in society by making use of specialized knowledge.
  • For the Behavioral Culture and Information Studies major, this includes the acquisition of knowledge and skills in informatics.
Doctoral Program
  1. Applicants must have specialized knowledge in the humanities (including informatics in the Department of Behavioral Culture and Information Studies) as a basis for conducting their own research.
  2. Applicants must have a desire to conduct advanced and original research that is not found in conventional research
  3. Those who have a broad interest in other academic fields in order to construct interdisciplinary and comprehensive research.

In addition to (1), (2), and (3), the Department of Behavioral and Cultural Informatics seeks students who have the research flexibility to integrate the humanities with a knowledge of information-related research.

Thesis Assessment Criteria (Common to the Two Majors)

Master’s Program

The following criteria will be applied when assessing the overall quality of a Master’s thesis:

  1. Originality and creativity
  2. Academic significance and appropriateness of the research topic
  3. Appropriate references to earlier studies
  4. Appropriate handling of literature, materials/data, investigations, etc.
  5. Logicality of the thesis
  6. Clarity, integrity, consistency of the arguments
  7. Clear and appropriate expression
Doctoral Program

The following criteria will be applied when assessing the overall quality of a doctoral thesis:

  1. Contribution to knowledge in the field of humanities
  2. Academic significance and appropriateness of the research topic
  3. Appropriate references to earlier studies
  4. Appropriate handling of literature, materials/data, investigations, etc.
