The Joint Degree Program is a unique opportunity to study at two universities over four years and earn a single, jointly conferred degree. The program provides a variety of support services to help students have a steady and fulfilling four years.
Compared to enrolling directly in a U.S. university, students receive support that is distinctive to Japanese universities. This includes assistance in improving English proficiency, as well as career guidance and support for both academic and professional development. In addition, the program offers international-standard academic advising — a feature uncommon at large Japanese universities.
In order to plan for four years of study and graduation, each student is provided with an academic advisor who they meet individually.
Advisors will support and advise students on everything from selecting and registering for courses, to how to improve academically (for example, on their English language skills), on health management, working towards a career, internships, tuition, and scholarships. Advisors from both universities will work closely together and update each other on the academic situation of each student. After a student moves to the U.S. they will receive support from their advisor at AU.
Note: In addition to regular advising sessions, additional advising will take place by email and in person throughout the semester.
After graduation, students will have the opportunities to pursue career opportunities in Japan, the U.S. and elsewhere, and will be given career advice at both RU and AU. RU Career Center offers a variety of career planning events and placement support services for students.
In addition to the regular curriculum, a variety of special extra-curricular programs are offered. Every year, students can take part in events designed to promote interaction among peers and deepen mutual understanding of Japanese and American cultures.
Students are welcome to consult with their academic advisors at any time about concerns related to student life. The Student Office and other on-campus resources are also available to support them. Kyoto, a student-friendly city, offers a safe and comfortable environment for both living and learning.
American University, located near Washington, D.C., also provides a secure and supportive setting, with JDP students residing in on-campus housing during their stay. In 2020, Ritsumeikan University established an office in Washington, D.C., to offer close and comprehensive support to JDP students studying at American University, ensuring they can focus on their studies with peace of mind.
Before traveling to the United States, students spend one and a half years at Ritsumeikan University, taking all classes in English alongside many international students in an environment equivalent to that of an overseas university (studying with students from the Department of International Relations, Global Studies Major).
Rather than starting studies in English abruptly in the U.S., students are given ample time—one and a half years—to prepare, which is a distinctive feature of this program.
The program also assists students in preparing for their journey to the U.S., including required vaccinations and visa applications. In cooperation with the Health Center, travel clinic services are provided, along with support for necessary procedures such as visa acquisition.
