Born in Japan, Jun graduated from Ritsumeikan University in 2015 and began her career at Accenture's Tokyo office, where she specialised in managing business and technology transformations. After recently completing her MBA at Monash Business School in Melbourne, Australia, she is now applying her expertise to lead transformative projects at a local organisation.

Please share your career after graduation from Ritsumeikan University.

SAKAKIBARAAfter completing an internship in my final year at Ritsumeikan University, I officially joined Accenture Japan in November 2015. Initially, I planned to pursue graduate studies, but my experience during the internship - exposing me to the organisation’s dynamic culture, rapid pace, and intriguing business challenges - led me to choose a career as a Management Consultant.

After six years at Accenture, I took an educational leave to pursue an MBA, seeking new perspectives on business and developing new skills. I chose Australia for its relaxed culture and renowned work-life balance and enrolled at Monash Business School in Melbourne in February 2022, the school that has a strong focus on management consulting.

While pursuing my MBA, I started to work at Monash University, where I contributed to a transformation project, balancing both studying and working. I graduated with my MBA in December 2023 and decided to resign from Accenture to gain further work experience and explore new opportunities in Melbourne.

Currently, I work at Uniting Vic Tas, one of Australia’s largest community service providers dedicated to making a positive social impact. I am part of a transformative project team driving significant business and technology changes across the organisation.

Please tell us about your current work. What led you to this profession?

SAKAKIBARADespite multiple job changes and relocations, my career has consistently focused on driving and managing transformative projects to catalyse organisational change. I began my career in management consulting, where I led projects for private sector clients. Driven by a desire to experience transformation from the client’s perspective, I took the relocation to Melbourne as an opportunity to switch sides, taking a role within an organisation and contributing to change internally.

As a Business Analyst at Uniting Vic Tas, I play a key role in a back-office transformation project. My responsibilities include not only facilitating technology and business process improvements but also navigating people through the change process.

Transformation is inherently challenging, often requiring more than just addressing technical issues. It involves reshaping behaviours, processes, and organisational culture to fully realise the benefits of change. Although such projects often encounter unexpected obstacles and require continuous strategy revision, the most rewarding aspect is seeing the organisation thrive through these changes.

Passionate about working with organisations that make a significant difference in people’s lives and communities, I enjoy working at Uniting Vic Tas. Despite the substantial industry transition and initial adjustments I had to make, I am dedicated to contributing to impactful causes and collaborating with my dedicated colleagues.

How does your experience while at the College of International Relations benefit you now?

SAKAKIBARABeyond the academic context, My time at the College of International Relations taught me two crucial lessons that continue to guide me today: thriving in diverse environments and cultivating a love of learning.

The Global Studies program at Ritsumeikan brought together a diverse cohort with a wide range of cultural, ethnic, and educational backgrounds. This environment pushed me to learn from others by respecting and embracing our differences. While I initially took this diversity for granted, I now recognise how it honed my interpersonal skills. My ability to communicate effectively, empathise with others, and adapt to diverse perspectives was nurtured during my time there. These skills have been invaluable for my growth both academically and professionally.

I remember struggling with demanding pre-class readings and assignments, often feeling frustrated by the workload. However, in hindsight, I appreciate the rationale behind these challenges. They drove me to constantly seek new knowledge and demonstrated the value of curiosity and a passion for learning. Ritsumeikan also offered numerous opportunities to explore my interests, such as spending a year abroad at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, where I focused on studying sociology. These experiences fueled my enthusiasm for learning, which has been pivotal for my continuous development as a professional.

When looking back on your days at Ritsumeikan University, how do you find the College of International Relations attractive?

SAKAKIBARAIn addition to the aspects previously mentioned, one of the highlights of the College of International Relations is its exceptionally supportive learning environment. The professors have hands-on approaches, offering personalised guidance to ensure that students receive the support they need. The Global Studies program benefits from small class sizes, which encourage active participation and in-depth discussions, facilitating easier collaboration among students. This close-knit setting helps build strong relationships with both peers and professors, creating a comfortable and safe space for learning. Given that many students are far from home, these connections often extend beyond the classroom, leading to lifelong friendships.

Another significant highlight is university’s location, Kyoto. The city’s rich cultural heritage and historic charm enhance the learning experience. The program’s comprehensive curriculum integrates various disciplines and addresses contemporary global issues. Studying international affairs in such a culturally dynamic city offers a unique educational experience, blending academic rigor with the beauty and historical depth of Kyoto. This combination provides a truly memorable experience, even for Japanese students.
