Developing my Japanese proficiency enabled me to engage in a wide range of experiences during my time in Japan.

DAO NGUYEN BAO Ngoc
Third-year Global Studies Major / International Student from Vietnam

We interviewed Ms. DAO NGUYEN BAO Ngoc about her student life in Japan and her future aspirations.

What made you decide to apply to Ritsumeikan University’s College of International Relations from Vietnam?

DaoFor as long as I can remember, I have spent time watching the news and reading newspapers. Becoming fluent in three languages has allowed me to access media in languages other than my mother tongue. This enables me to look at the same issue from diverse perspectives and become more open-minded. When deciding on a course of study at university, I wanted to acknowledge the importance of globalization and international relations between countries. After discovering Ritsumeikan University, I found that the curriculum and aims of the Global Studies major in the College of International Relations were ideally suited to what I was looking for, which is why I decided to apply.

Please share your most fulfilling activity or most unforgettable experience while at Ritsumeikan University.

DaoOne of my most fulfilling experiences has been participating in a student-led organization at Ritsumeikan called KYPP, which stands for Kyoto Youth Peace Program. Our aim was to educate visitors about the significant role that student movements have played in advocating for peace and social justice, both within Kansai and globally. Through being a member of KYPP, I learned how to coordinate with official institutions, collaborate with other student organizations outside Japan, and coordinate guest speakers. This experience also inspired me to launch my own project in the future, where I can use my own voice to advocate for what I believe in.

We have heard that you have made a big effort to learn Japanese. How does the Japanese language skill benefit your life ?

DaoMy JLPT level is N1. Being fluent in Japanese has given me multiple opportunities to be active both on- and off- campus. I was able to gain valuable insights into Japanese society by applying for part time jobs in a field that I am interested in such as being a guest speaker for International Understanding Education, student staff at Kyoto Museum for World Peace, and even short-term part-time jobs at the Kansai International Airport. At the same time, I was able to make friends more easily, either by helping other international students with Japanese or simply speaking Japanese with my Japanese friends. These have become unforgettable memories and experiences that I would not have been able to gain without Japanese language skills.

How has your Japanese language ability benefited your life?

DaoYes, living and studying in Japan has definitely changed the way I see Vietnam. Through this experience, I had the opportunity to encounter different cultures, improve my language skills, and broaden my worldview. It allowed me to reflect on the differences between Japan and Vietnam and recognize what my country is still missing and needs to work on. As someone who has had the privilege to study abroad, I hope to return and play a small part in contributing to Vietnam’s development and growth.

What are your plans after graduation? What made you pursue them?

DaoI am planning to pursue a Master’s degree in International Relations in Japan after graduation. The reason I have decided to continue my studies in Japan is that I acknowledge how this experience has opened many doors for my future career in the field of IR. In particular, being a student at Ritsumeikan University has helped me build connections with others who share the same mindset and values as me. In the future, I plan to continue using my Japanese proficiency to bridge the language gap and help strengthen diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Japan.

Could you send some messages to prospective students for the College of International Relations at Ritsumeikan University?

DaoSometimes it is extremely overwhelming to be a GS student, especially during this chaotic diplomatic time. However, please remember that you are not alone on this journey. One of the most empowering aspects of being a Global Studies student is that we can always create our own projects to advocate for what we believe in. That freedom to use our voices and take initiative is what makes this program truly rewarding.
