From Language Learning to Peacebuilding: Growing Through Global Engagement
PHAM Nhat Linh
Second-year Global Studies Major
We interviewed Pham Nhat Linh, a second-year Global Studies major in the College of International Relations. Drawing on her multicultural background and strong commitment to language learning and peace-related initiatives, she reflects on her academic growth, overseas study experiences, and active engagement in both academic and extracurricular activities at Ritsumeikan University.
What attracted you to apply to the College of International Relations at Ritsumeikan University, and what motivated you to study Global Studies?
LinhI was attracted to the College of International Relations at Ritsumeikan University because of its strong emphasis on connecting theory with real-world global issues. Having grown up between cultures, from Vietnam and living in Japan since a young age, I have always been interested in how language, history, and political background shape people’s perspectives and interactions. Especially in my major - Global Studies, which appealed to me because it does not only view international issues from a single national standpoint, but also encourages me to understand the world through multiple lenses.
The diversity of students’ backgrounds in Ritsumeikan and its active learning environment further motivated me to apply for this course. For me, here is a place where students can learn about the world, and engage with it directly through study abroad programs, fieldwork and social initiatives. I believed that studying Global Studies at Ritsumeikan would help me to deepen my academic understanding while also developing the practical skills needed to contribute meaningfully to international society.
These academic experiences have helped me grow into a more proactive, reflective, and motivated learner who is eager to continue challenging myself in both academic and international settings.
We have heard that you have made an effort on- and off-campus, and recently you were awarded the R+ scholarship. Please share your academic activities (including what you have learned, what skills you have obtained, how you feel you have grown, your motivation for learning etc.).
LinhThroughout my time at Ritsumeikan University, I have actively sought opportunities to apply what I learn in classes to real-world contexts. Academically, I have focused on international relations, peace studies, and language learning, while taking part in international programs that complemented my coursework.
In the summer of 2024, I participated in the Peking University Short-Term Study Abroad Program, an official program recognized within my academic enrollment period. Although there were limited opportunities to deeply interact with local students because it was during the summer vacation period, I challenged myself to live in a Chinese-speaking environment and communicate with local people in daily life using Chinese. I also took part in cultural activities during the program, such as traditional Chinese tea ceremonies, guqin (classical Chinese instrument) experiences, and calligraphy workshops. The chance to study at one of China’s top universities exposed me to highly motivated peers and broadened my intellectual values, encouraging me to think more critically and globally.
After returning to Japan and starting the second semester, I challenged myself academically by taking both the HSK Level 4 and Level 5 examinations at the same time. As a result, I passed Level 4 and narrowly missed Level 5 by only three points. Rather than being discouraged, this experience strengthened my motivation, leading me to choose Chinese as a minor and continue improving my language skills.
These academic and extracurricular efforts have helped me grow into a more proactive, reflective and motivated learner who is eager to continuously challenge myself.

Please share your most fulfilling activity or most unforgettable experience while at Ritsumeikan University.
LinhOne of my most fulfilling experiences at Ritsumeikan University was participating in the Kyoto Youth Peace Program as a volunteer during my first year. What made this experience especially meaningful to me was the opportunity to transform academic knowledge into real action.
Through this program, I helped organize peace-related workshops at Ritsumeikan University by inviting professors from other universities, managing posters, and assisting with event operations. I also contributed to an exhibition at the Ritsumeikan Peace Museum, which required collecting and organizing photos and materials from countries currently affected by war.
Working alongside senior students, I learned how to plan and manage educational events, communicate effectively with different audiences, and collaborate within a team. Handling real objects and images related to ongoing conflicts made global issues feel immediate and personal. I realized that peace is not an abstract concept, but something that must be actively communicated and protected.
This experience strongly influenced my future aspirations, and it strengthened my desire to work in fields where education, dialogue, and international understanding intersect.

What are your plans after graduation? What made you pursue them?
LinhAfter graduation, I hope to pursue a career in international cooperation, cultural exchange, or education-related fields, particularly those that connect Japan, Vietnam, China, and the wider Asia-Pacific region. My goal is to become a bridge between different cultures and societies by using my multilingual abilities and international perspective.
I am currently improving four languages, which are Vietnamese, Japanese, English, and Chinese. Then, I hope to further refine these skills to support dialogue and mutual understanding. My experiences at Ritsumeikan University, especially studying abroad in China and engaging in peace-related activities in Japan, have shown me the power of language and education in reducing misunderstandings and fostering trust. These experiences strongly motivated me to pursue a path where I can contribute to a more inclusive and peaceful international society.
Could you send some messages to prospective students for the College of International Relations at Ritsumeikan University?
LinhTo prospective students, I would say that the College of International Relations at Ritsumeikan University is a place where your curiosity and initiative are truly valued. If you are willing to challenge yourself, this university will provide countless opportunities to grow academically, personally, and globally.
What makes Ritsumeikan special is not only its programs, but also its people. Interacting with motivated and diverse students has constantly inspired me to aim higher and push beyond my comfort zone. I am deeply grateful to Ritsumeikan University for providing an environment that encourages exploration, dialogue, and action. If you want to study global issues while actively engaging with the world, this is the right place for you.
