An independent research center

The Graduate School of Language Education and Information Science (LEIS) is a graduate school that does not have an associated undergraduate department. In Japan, at many universities, it is common for students to move onto a research department within the same institution. LEIS was set up as a department accessible to the wider society. Of course, students come up from Ritsumeikan undergraduate courses, as well as from other universities. Students also come to LEIS as working teachers of English and Japanese, from overseas, and as recent retirees from the teaching profession. In short, all kinds of people with an interest in language study in the department.


Students in LEIS belong to one of four different disciplines: English Language Education, Japanese Language Education, Language Information and Communication with a focus on English, or Language Information and Communication with a focus on Japanese. However, it is possible for students to cross over into other disciplines to conduct research. With the exception of a very few subjects, subjects in all disciplines are open to students. In addition, many introductory survey classes are considered shared courses and so are available to any student.

Seminar Classes

Since this is a graduate school, naturally students will belong to a seminar group and receive guidance from a professor every week. But in LEIS, students will belong to a seminar group in their second year. In the first year, students will be under the guidance of an “advisor” as they make their study progress plan and write their research plan.

Research Paper

To graduate from LEIS, students are required to submit a research paper. Concerning why we refer to it as a “research paper” rather than as a “master’s thesis”, it is because selecting the production of educational materials, or the construction of a corpus/database as a research topic and pursuing that to its conclusion fulfills, and is recognized as, fulfilling the completion requirements for a master’s degree.


Usually in graduate schools, the submission of a research paper is succeeded by an oral examination. In LEIS, prior to submission, two oral presentations must be made. At the beginning of the 4th semester, the first colloquium is held and at the end the second colloquium is held. In the first instance, each student is allotted a space of two square meters on a wall to make a poster presentation and in the second, a regular oral presentation is made.

TESOL/Japanese teaching practicum

In the English education program, students have the option of participating in TESOL programs in overseas partner universities, at either the University of British Columbia in Canada, or the University of Southern Queensland in Australia. In the Japanese education program, students can do a practicum at an educational institution in Japan such as Ritsumeikan University, Asia Pacific University, and Japanese language schools in Kyoto. Moreover, students can also do educational training abroad, in English or Chinese speaking countries, Korea, and other countries.


Huge language databases (called "corpora") stored on our high-specification Linus server can be used to accurately describe the patterns of usage of Japanese and English. A corpus is very useful in linguistic research. In fact, corpus-based linguistic research is one of the characteristics of our graduate school. Most importantly, we do not use a corpus as a blackbox but put the utmost importance on methodological considerations for precise analysis of texts for linguistic research. Traditional grammar, descriptive grammar and linguistic theories (including generative grammar) are regarded as important bases for corpus studies. In the coming years, LEIS will continue to obtain/purchase as many corpora as possible. This means that this graduate school will be one of the best for corpus-based linguistic research within a few years.
