[Research Theme] | Experimental Investigation of Brick Masonry Walls
[Brief Summary] |
It is a part of ongoing activities of material properties investigations of old masonry buildings which were constructed three hundred years ago. Since it is very difficult to cut the old masonry wall from the buildings, similar wall specimen were made from old bricks collected from old houses and using similar bonding materials and techniques that had been used in the past. Then the walls were tested at IOE lab in three kinds of loadings. They are diagonal shear/tension test, compression test and combined lateral and vertical loading tests. From the experiments, various materials properties such as modulus of elasticity, Poisson's ratio are calculated. In addition, it gives the shear and compressive strengths of old masonry constrictions. Both material properties and strength are very important for numerical analysis of the buildings. |

[Place] | International Institute for Applied System Analysis (IIASA) (Austria)
[Research Theme] | Reconstruction rural socio-economic systems based on low-carbon strategy using biochar
[Brief Summary] |
I reported on the outcome of the research which targets reconstructing rural socio-economic systems based on low-carbon strategy at International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Vienna, Austria, and discussed with the several researchers who are engaged in the relevant works. Based on the series of discussions, I set the new research issue named "Exploring Relationships among Concepts in Food & Water System based on Ontology Engineering". This research issue targeted the model designing based on the content of the paper reported at the 3rd International Biochar Conference 2010 (IBI) in Rio de Janeiro. I implemented the research of this issue, and got the measure to link all kinds of models related to low-carbon strategy and to reuse these models as a result. As a result of this research I got the measure to link the entire framework of the rural socio-economic systems based on low-carbon strategy with the individual models on sustainability. This measure enables us to build the entire model covering these systems. In the course of the collaboration with the research groups of "Land Use & Agriculture" and "Integrated Modeling Environment", I implemented to construct the international research network for social system design based on low-carbon strategy. In the process of this research collaboration I informed that Ritsumeikan University was tacking climate change problem from the viewpoint of disaster prevention of cultural heritage. This activity clarified the international position in environment-oriented disaster prevention as a research base of urban disaster prevention. This time's research at IIASA became an occasion for getting the collaborators of the research project at Ritsumeikan University. In addition I found that the information gained through the research at IIASA could be applied to the issue-setting to implement new international research collaboration. |

[Research Theme] | Recovery, conservation and restoration systems after disasters in Historic Urban Heritage
[Brief Summary] |
During the program, I made field research activities on the recovery, conservation and restoration at the earthquake disaster affected areas in Arequipa, Cuzco and Lima,
the World Heritage historic cities in Peru, then visited related administrative authorities, and exchanged views with related researchers. On December 3rd, I made my presentation on "Disaster Risk Management of Cultural Heritage; Sustainable Conservation of Urban Heritage Conservation in Seismic Zones: The Role of Structural Engineers and Conservation Architects", at the International Lima Symposium 2010. |
□ Qinglin CUI Postdoctoral Fellow, Ritsumeikan Global Innovation Research Organization, Ritsumeikan University |
[Period] | 2010/11/15-2011/1/28 (75 Days)
[Place] | Center for Public Safety Research, Tsinghua University (China)
[Research Theme] | Extraction of disaster prevention problem in historical sightseeing spot region and surveillance study on revival process
[Brief Summary] |
・Monthly regular meeting and ther irregular meeting in Tsinghua University. ・Meeting in Beijing University of Technology and North China University of Technology. ・Japan and China High-rise building fire safety expert meeting. ・International meeting in Shanghai Institute of Disaster Prevention and Relief, Tongji University, Shanghai. Opinions on recent case of Chinese earthquake and at social systems on the field of disaster mitigation were exchanged. It is challenged that development of technology could not always improve ability of disaster prevention at either national or local level because of difference among countries (or regions). To grasp ability of disaster prevention at national and local level objectively, method to evaluate it comprehensively is required. By dividing the ability of disaster prevention into technological and social aspects, considered both of them as to promote disaster prevention, it could be possible to deal with problems above. For further studies, it is planned to identify technological and social ability of disaster prevention, through analyzing and investigating the actual case of Japan and China. For this purpose, in this period of staying, data, literatures and books for references were collected. Finally, by realizing international ranking of disaster prevention for cultural heritage, It would be contributed to improve ability of disaster prevention. |

[Period] | 2010/12/1-2011/2/10 (72 Days)
[Place] | Centre of Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA), University College London (United Kingdom)
[Research Theme] | Impact of disaster on intra-urban structure during the 20th century
[Brief Summary] |
In order to reveal the disasters impacts on long-term changes of the urban structures, this studyexamines their relationship from the viewpoint of residential characteristics.
For this purpose, I have collected small area statistics of six major cities in Japan during the 20th century and built their GIS database. My visit to CASA this time gave me an opportunity to examine London in the same manner, one of European cities bombed heavily during WWII, by collecting the data of the bombed damages and the censuses from 1911 to 1961 by boroughs. The purpose of this visit was to collect small area statistics of London during the early 20th century. Although the UK has a longer history of the census than Japan, my survey in this visit showed that the local government of London does not also have many the past statistics by small area units. With this problem in mind, I will review the significance of building databases of the small area statistics of Kyoto form an international viewpoint. |

□ Princess Akiko of MIKASA Postdoctoral Fellow, Kinugasa Research Organization, Ritsumeikan University |
[Period] | 2011/1/28-2011/3/30 (62 Days)
[Place] | The British Museum (United Kingdom)
[Research Theme] | Development of the study of Japanese art in the 19th century Britain
[Brief Summary] |
I worked on the survey record of the Japanese painting collection at the British Museum, done by Kohitsu Ryonin in 1902 and the translation of Japanese illustrated books by Arthur Waley. I updated these data to the British Museum Merlin database. The Arthur Waley archive is still on the half way, so I am aiming to continue working on this material. I am now confident that academic exchange between the Art Research Centre and the British Museum became much stronger than before and it was very fruitful to have discovered new aspects of the Japanese collection of the British Museum. |
