The best reason to study economics –maybe the only reason– is the joy and satisfaction that accompanies a deeper understanding of the world and our place in it. That understanding comes from ideas. Study Economics and you will know that the most powerful ideas often are simple ones, so simple that, once pointed out, they seem obvious. Economics comprises many such ideas including Coase’s Law, Supply and Demand, Revealed Preference, and Comparative Advantage. Make these ideas your touchstones and your understanding of the world will deepen. It is my wish that Ritsumeikan will forever be a place where students from around the world can experience the joy that comes from that.
