Dr. Masahiro Fujimoto, Assistant Professor in the College of Sport and Health Science, published a research paper in Gait & Posture, co-authored with Dr. Li-Shan Chou at the University of Oregon. This paper showed that even when walking velocity was similar, the velocity was controlled differently by acceleration between healthy young and older adults, and that the older fallers demonstrated a more conservative walking strategy than healthy subjects. Examining acceleration, in addition to velocity, during walking would provide a greater understanding of person's balance control, which would allow us to better reveal underlying mechanisms of gait imbalance or falls.
