I have started to teach CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) classes in 1989 using personal computers (DOS computers = NEC 9800VMs) at the Computer Center of Toyohashi University of Technology (TUT) and have restarted to teach with the new I had planned 54 networked Macintosh computers (PowerMac 6100/60AVs) at the Language Center of TUT. I was in charge of managing them until March 1998.
Due to the scheduling problem for the 1995 academic year, I only used it for two classes (English IV and Introduction to CALL). In the English IV class, I mainly taught English composition using E-mail using Eudora J and MOOs such as schMOOze University using Telnet for the first term. I was a facilitator to let students explore the WWW world using Netscape for the second term. Introduction to CALL was for graduate students and covered CALL history, software evaluation including EFL/ESL software, the Internet, etc.
1996-97 Academic Year
- Undergraduate General English III-F class: Using a multimedia CD-ROM (Dynamic English series and NOVA City) students learned vocabulary, grammar, listening, speaking, etc. at their own pace.
- Undergraduate General English IV-E class: Using a browser, Netscape 2.02, students visited a variety of homepages (basically English-written pages) and wrote reports in English (summary of the homepage they visited each time and their impression) based on one report per class.
- Graduate Selective Class 1 (Introduction to CALL): Under the revised syllabus of 1995 students learned about CALL software, HyperCard, and the Internet while writing a report on evaluation standards, making a 30-minute oral presentation, etc.
- Graduate Selective Class 2 (WWW Projects): Students as small groups worked together to create " Toyohashi: A Great Local City" web pages while learning the basics such as HTML, etc. Please find out about the Toyohashi area if you are interested in a local city in Japan.
1997-98 Academic Year
- Undergraduate General English Basic II class: Using only the LL function of the CALL Lab and a listening text & tapes students can develop their listening skills, while sometimes entertaining them with some video programs.
- Undergraduate General English III-G class: Using a multimedia CD-ROM (Dynamic English series and NOVA City) students learned vocabulary, grammar, listening, speaking, etc. at their own pace.
- Undergraduate General English IV-C class: Using a browser, Netscape 3.01, students visited a variety of homepages (basically English-written pages) in different fields and written reports in English (summary of the homepage they visited each time and their impression) using a given form based on one report per class hour. they also had to submit some homework by reading each chapter of the text - The Elements of E-mail Style by David Angell & Brent Heslop (1994).
- Graduate Selective Class 1 (Introduction to CALL): Under the revised syllabus of 1996 students learned about CALL software, HyperCard, and the Internet while writing a report on the evaluation standards, creating a HyperCard stack, making a 30-minute oral presentation, etc.
- Graduate Selective Class 2 (WWW Projects): Students as small groups worked together to create "Famous Japanese Scientists and Engineers" web pages while learning the basics such as HTML, etc.
