Specialization/Discipline
Cultural Anthropology, Japan Studies, Gender and Sexuality Studies
Research Topic
As a cultural anthropologist and a feminist scholar, I pursue social movements in Japan, particularly feminism and right-wing movements. I have been conducting ethnographic fieldwork on feminist activism, as well as anti-feminist backlash and grassroots right-wing movements in contemporary Japan. I am also interested in the politics of gender and sexuality, and popular culture in Japan.
What fascinates me about cultural anthropology is that I can meet diverse people and listen to their voices. When I see and listen to the voices of people who may share similar experiences and opinions with me, and those with very different backgrounds and opinions, I can always discover something new. In addition, seeing and experiencing various things on my own is directly related to my research. Both anthropology and Gender Studies give me great hints for confronting racism and sexism in my everyday life, and in my scholarly work.

Graduate-level study involves choosing a topic of interest, reviewing existing literature, conducting research, and critically analyzing the findings. The significance and enjoyment of research can be greatly influenced by finding a theme you are passionate about and being able to pursue it. This may be particularly true in research involving ethnographic fieldwork. I would be delighted to assist you in this endeavor.
