To enjoy true Japanese Culture.
Aaron(AJ)Glassさん/Study in Kyoto Program(SKP)
Aaron (AJ) Glass is currently studying in the Intensive Japanese Language track of SKP.
Q:What club/circles are you currently involved in at Ritsumeikan?
A:Nihon Kempo (日本拳法)
Q:What was your first contact with the Nihon Kempo Club?
A:I walked through the gym watching the different martial arts clubs train, and Nihon Kempo looked the most interesting and also a martial art that would test what I had learned already. I just asked them if it was possible for a foreigner to train with them and they let me know what to wear and when practice was. I was really excited with the opportunity to train a pure Japanese martial art.
Q:Did you have experience playing in martial arts before joining this circle?
A:I have trained in martial arts for about 5 years now. I have also trained in many different styles trying to find my true style. I've studied Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, Kendo, Shorinji Kempo, Chun Kuk Do, and Kabudo(Nunchaku). This was my chance to finally train in Nihon Kempo.
Q:How often does the circle hold practices?
A:3 times a week, Monday, Thursday, and Saturday 2-3hours a practice.
Q:What is the most challenging aspect of being part of this circle?
A:Of course the language is something difficult, but if you can speak some Japanese you can get by. The hardest thing about the language barrier would have to be what exercise or drill we will be doing next because they use very difficult Japanese that is not used often, but after awhile you will pick up the words and the routines.
Q:What is the most rewarding aspect of being part of this circle?
A:Making great friends that I can learn from and also learning more about myself through martial arts. I was also given the chance to fight in a tournament recently, and it was an experience I will never forget! I want to know my limits, and then surpass them. Nihon Kempo gives me that chance.
Q:Any last message you would like to give to other students looking to join a club or circle at Ritsumeikan?
A:If you want to make great friends and enjoy true Japanese Culture, joining a club or circle is the best way to do so.
