Greetings

When the Empire of Japan bombed Pearl Harbor on December 7^th, 1941, Tom Masaki did not think much about the sirens. As a student at Mid-Pacific High School, about twenty kilometers from Pearl Harbor, he was no stranger to air raid sirens. But on that fateful day, as he looked out of the classroom window, there on the underside of the plane’s wings flying overhead were blazing red suns. In that moment, he realized that this was not a drill. This was war.

Masaki enlisted in the United States Army, becoming a part of the 100^th Infantry Battalion/442^nd Regimental Combat Team. From rescuing the Lost Battalion trapped behind Nazi lines to breaking through the Gothic Line that led to Germany’s surrender, the 100^th and 442^nd were crucial members of the American war effort. However, despite being the most decorated military unit in the history of the United States, few people know their story. This exhibit hopes to remedy that.

Tom Masaki’s youngest grandchild, Sachiko, is currently studying at Ritsumeikan University as a third-year student in the Joint Degree Program with American University in Washington, D.C. Compiling family photographs and oral histories, Sachiko submitted this exhibit through the Kyoto Museum for World Peace’s call for community exhibit proposals.

1941年12月7日（現地時間）、大日本帝国が真珠湾を爆撃した時、トム・マサキは警報をさほど気にも留めなかった。真珠湾から約20キロ離れたミッド・パシフィック高校の生徒だった彼にとって、空襲警報は珍しいものではなかった。しかし、その運命の日、教室の窓の外を見上げると、頭上を飛ぶ飛行機の翼の下に、燃えるような赤い太陽が浮かんでいた。その瞬間、彼はこれが訓練ではないと悟った。これは戦争だったのだ。

マサキはアメリカ陸軍に入隊し、第100歩兵大隊／第442連隊戦闘団の一員となった。ナチス戦線の後方に孤立した「ロスト・バタリオン（アメリカ第77師団9個中隊）」の救出から、ドイツの降伏につながった「ゴシック・ライン」（ドイツ軍の防衛線）の突破に至るまで、第100歩兵大隊と第442連隊はアメリカの戦争遂行において極めて重要な役割を果たした。しかし、米国史上最も多くの勲章を受けた部隊であるにもかかわらず、その物語を知る人はほとんどいない。本展は、それを伝えるために企画した。

トム・マサキ氏の末孫であるサチコは、現在、立命館大学でワシントンD.C.のアメリカン大学との共同学位プログラムの3年生として学んでいる。サチコは、家族の写真やオーラル・ヒストリーをまとめ、国際平和ミュージアムのギャラリー展示に応募した。
