NGUYEN Ba Hai
Third-year Global Studies Major

We interviewed NGUYEN Ba Hai, a third-year Global Studies major student who was awarded the Saionji Memorial Scholarship, about his life and activities at Ritsumeikan University, Japan.

What motivated you to apply to the College of International Relations, Ritsumeikan University, and what did you want to learn in International Relations before enrollment?

Ba HaiThe biggest motivation for me when deciding to pursue a degree in International Relations at Ritsumeikan University has been my own personal observation of global inequalities, political instability and non-traditional security issues that has continuously impeded the lives of people. Coming from a Southeast Asian country with a long history of armed conflicts and colonialism – Vietnam has made me realized the importance of building and maintaining positive peace which would allow people to live their lives and human society to progress free of violence and persecution. In addition to learning about peace processes, prior to enrollment in International Relations, I also wanted to equip myself with knowledges in regard to the complexities of transnational organized crime as solving issues of drug and human trafficking across the international borders remain critically important to our contemporary time.

What attracts you to study Global Studies?

Ba HaiThe main attraction of Global Studies for me is its flexibility in exploring diverse and interconnected aspects of the world through an interdisciplinary approach of academic disciplines such as international relations, sociology, area studies, economics, etc. This flexibility would also translate into diverse career and opportunities since Global Studies equips me with critical and analytical thinking of the world processes and allows for an interest-based professional paths.

Please tell us the most fulfilling activity you participated in, and most memorable experience while at Ristumeikan University, Japan.

Ba HaiThe most memorable activity that I have participated in while at Ritsumeikan University has been being working alongside other motivated students to establish and operated our organization of “Ritsumeikan Food Bank” with the aims of ensuring food and nutrition security for the university students and building an inclusive and welcoming campus environment. Together, we have been able to collect, sort, and deliver food boxes to students in needs for the past three years, and organizing educational events, as well as, participating in research projects relating to our primary goal of tackling food insecurity. Working as the president of Ritsumeikan Food Bank has taught me the value of working hard toward the betterment of others as it is undoubtedly the most fulling experience that I could even done which has continuously humbled and personally motivated me to be a better version of myself and help others to best of my abilities. I feel privileged to have been given the opportunity to work alongside so many kind-hearted students toward the manifestation of a common societal objective.

Please tell us about your career intentions after graduation and what made you pursue such a career path?

Ba HaiMy career intention after graduating is to continue my academic journey by pursuing a Master's and eventually obtaining a PhD in the field of peace studies, as well as humanitarian aids. This is partially due to my personal dream of wanting to make a positive difference in the world and ensuring that every individuals can lead their lives with the dignities, rights, equities that they deserved. Furthermore, I want to devote myself to the making of a peaceful world and alleviate human’s sufferings through means of international cooperations and political discorses.
