This week the students worked hard to level up their reading! They did a good job working together to try and sound out new words and used lots of clues from their books to understand the words and the stories. Nice work second graders!

Reading challenge in pairs!

In grade 2 English, we have been practicing sounding out words and reading phonetically. We’ve been levelling up our reading activities little by little! Our new challenge for everyone in term 3 is reading short books.

First we let the students know that they didn’t have to read an entire book alone, they could worked in pairs. As we passed out the books we could hear “Can I really read it?” “This is looks fun!” and see everyone’s smiles.  We told them it’s to make mistakes and of course there will be new words you don’t know. More important than focusing on getting everything perfectly correct, we wanted them to try using their voices to read aloud. When they couldn’t figure it out, we advised them to work together with their partners. “It will be amazing if you can understand what the story is about,” we said and started the activity.

It was wonderful to see students using illustrations as hints and reading carefully word by word while helping each other. We’ll continue to help them develop the feeling that if they don’t give up they can read by themselves. We will keep encouraging them to have confidence in their reading abilities. No matter how much they can do we want them all to proudly say “I read it!”.
