Maternity leave (before giving birth) | This leave can be taken from 8 weeks(14 weeks in the case of multiple pregnancies) prior to the due date until the delivery date. |
Maternity leave (after giving birth) | Postpartum leave must be taken for eight weeks from the day following delivery. However, if a medical certificate is issued by a doctor that allows the employee to return to work six weeks after childbirth, the employee may request to return to work |
Accruing childcare time (less than one hour) | A system that recognizes childcare time for female teaching staff and other staff with children under the age of 1 (twice a day for 30 minutes a session) |

Childcare leave at birth | This system allows the partner of the person who has given birth to take up to four weeks of leave within eight weeks of the birth,in addition to the existing childcare leave. This leave can be taken twice, e.g., once for two weeks to attend the birth, and then again for two weeks, one week after taking the first leave. |

Childcare leave | Teaching staff and other staff can obtain childcare leave to raise children living in the same house.This leave shall be capped at the day the child turns 1 year and 6 months old, or the last day in April the year after the child turns 1. |
Reduced working hours for child care | A system where teaching staff and other staff can choose to reduce their working hours to provide childcare until the child enters junior high school |
Flextime system for childcare | A maximum of 60 minutes of flextime is allowed per day until the child graduates from elementary school. |
Sick/Injured Child care leave | This leave is available to employees with a child who has not yet reached junior high school age to provide care for the child's injury or illness or to accompany the child to for health checkups or vaccinations as stipulated in the Maternal and Child Health Act. |
Subsidy for babysitter use |
Assistance for the use of a babysitter, temporary daycare service or a home helper when the parent is unable to provide childcare at home or provide nursing care Also valid for registration and renewal fees at the time of use (yearly cap of 60,000 yen) |
Babysitter Dispatch Service Discount Coupons | Assistance for the use of a babysitter by discount coupons when the parent is unable to provide childcare. Coupons can only be used for babysitter service providers designated by the All Japan Childcare Services Association. |
Work-life Balance Leave | This is a leave of absence that can be taken to promote harmony between work and personal life. This leave can be used for any reason. |
Research support staff system | The system that provides a salary subsidy of up to 300,000 yen per term (6 months) to hire “research support staff” for continued research, in order to allow employees to balance their research activities with pregnancy, childbirth, childcare, nursing care and other life events. |
Temporary daycare centers | Temporary daycare centers are open on Sundays and national holidays. (except during summer and winter vacation) Requires an applications at least two weeks in advance. |
