Myaku Report ~Osaka・Kansai Expo Tour~
- Zemi: 山口ゼミ
- Instructor: 山口 智美
- Presentation Language: Japanese
We conducted a field trip to the Osaka Expo, observing and analyzing it from two perspectives: our direct experiences as visitors and the public responses expressed through media and social media. Focusing on four key themes—media coverage, pavilion design, accessibility, and sustainability—we examined the attractions, challenges, and environmental efforts presented at the Expo. By incorporating the experiences and observations of members who visited the site multiple times, this project provides new insights for both those who attended and for those who were unable to attend it.

Sports and Politics: How Close Should The Connection Be?
- Zemi: 川村ゼミ
- Instructor: 川村 仁子
- Presentation Language: Japanese
We will give a presentation on political issues in sports. It is often said that sports and politics should be kept separate, but they are also sometimes described as being two sides of the same coin. In reality, sports have frequently reflected and even influenced political and social movements throughout history. Throughout history, sports have reflected social and political movements, with athletes using their platforms to protest against discrimination and inequality. In many cases, bringing political issues into sports has divided public opinion, and this debate remains unresolved. In this presentation, we will focus on racial issues and explore how athletes and organizations have addressed them through actions such as the Black Lives Matter movement and protests at international competitions.

Aid as Coexistence? That’s Brainwashing!
- Zemi: 嶋田ゼミ
- Instructor: 嶋田 晴行
- Presentation Language: Japanese
This presentation examines whether aid from developed to developing countries truly represents coexistence or merely the imposition of goodwill. Assuming the existence of underlying power dynamics, discrimination, and structural inequality, aid is categorized into three types—local, donation-based, and government-led (such as ODA)—and each is analyzed in detail. By evaluating concrete cases, clarifying the merits and drawbacks of each form, and identifying common problems, we explore possible solutions to the root causes and reconsider the future direction of international aid.

- Zemi: 鳥山ゼミ
- Instructor: 鳥山 純子
- Presentation Language: Japanese
The “Kuitsukushikei-Otto”—a phenomenon gaining traction on social media in recent years—where a man eats up his family's entire meal. Many of you may have heard of this or recognize someone in your own family. Why do they eat up everything? Why is it more often husbands than wives? Why do they never do this at company parties or meals with friends, yet devour everything at home? Let's unravel these mysteries from a gender perspective!

Rumor has it, Japan’s national music stars are gone now.
- Zemi: 大山ゼミ
- Instructor: 大山 真司
- Presentation Language: Japanese
In recent years, television viewership has declined while music subscription services have become increasingly widespread. As a result of these changes, the “national music stars” and “shared hit songs” once familiar to the entire public seem to be disappearing. Songs that everyone can sing along to are becoming rare, and musical experiences appear to be increasingly personalized and fragmented. This phenomenon suggests that the social role of music and the sense of cultural sharedness it once embodied may be undergoing significant change, which serves as the background for this study.

“Does Japanese Hip-Hop Have a Future? — In Comparison with American Hip-Hop”
- Zemi: 中本ゼミ
- Instructor: 中本 真生子
- Presentation Language: Japanese
Starting from this question, we take a closer look at two different “streets” — those of America and Japan. In the United States, hip-hop emerged as a cry against society, while in Japan, it developed as a new form of self-expression. This presentation explores how hip-hop has evolved within these contrasting cultural contexts, examining the ways in which the music has influenced society and shaped the values of young people. Finally, in an era of increasing globalization, we consider what kind of future Japanese hip-hop can envision — and what possibilities lie ahead.

Animism vs capitalism: the root cause of environmental issues today
- Zemi: 林ゼミ
- Instructor: 林 大祐
- Presentation Language: Japanese
In the course of history under the system of capitalism, humans viewed nature as a resource and sacrificed it for their own benefit. From the capitalistic perspective and ideology, all elements of nature—such as plants and animals—are regarded merely as resources. This idea implies that humans see themselves as superior to nature, which stands in stark contrast to traditional animistic beliefs, where people once believed that every object, including humans, equally possessed a spirit and worshiped them. In our presentation, we argue that current environmental problems and global warming can be traced back to this problematic way of capitalistic ideology.

MARA : Make America Rare Again
- Zemi: Ataka Zemi
- Instructor: ATAKA Hiroaki
- Presentation Language: English
The research investigates how the dominance of China over rare earth elements (REEs) is currently reshaping the United States’ resource diplomacy and geoeconomic strategy. As REEs currently play a big role in critical technologies, ranging from defense systems to renewable energy, China’s control over the påroduction gives the country strategic leverage. In response, the U.S. has launched initiatives to secure alternative supply chains, revitalize domestic mining, and deepen partnerships with allies. This research takes a critical look through resource security and geopolitical competition, arguing that America’s pursuit of “Rare Earth Independence” reflects a broader effort to reclaim autonomy in the face of China’s growing influence.

The Effects of Trump’s Tariffs on the Steel Industry in Japan and the U.S.
- Zemi: Watanabe Zemi
- Instructor: WATANABE Hiroaki Richard
- Presentation Language: English
The effects of the Trump administration’s tariffs between the first and second terms on Japan and the United States were similar because of broader macroeconomic implications, such as ventures into middle markets for steel exports and labor. However, nuances in behaviors in both markets arise from the nuances in tariff policy from the first and second terms. During the second Trump Administration, the increased scale of tariff percentage generated different responses between countries, with U.S. companies undertaking proactive stockpiling measures and Japanese companies addressing fiscal policy surrounding the market prices in Yen. Japanese steel producers experienced losses in export quantity and indirect adverse effects from other tariff-targeted countries during both rounds of tariffs, with producers choosing to diversify export markets and maintain their products’ price in yen as the dollar price rose. However, the effects differed in their scale for both countries and, in the case of the U.S., the degree of preparedness by steel-dependent companies.

Where do we find the laughter?
- Team JDP
- Instructor: SMITH Nathaniel M.
- Presentation Language: English
What’s the difference in humor between Manzai and Stand-up comedy? This study will analyze humor cross-culturally to understand how comedians use different joke structures, social expectations, and mores to entertain audiences. Comedy provides a critical lens on how norms and collective morality are constructed. Japanese manzai duo Downtown and American comedian George Carlin will serve as primary case studies for comparison, illustrating how humor both reflects and challenges cultural values, social taboos, and modes of communication in society. Having studied both in Japan and the U.S., we’ve come to notice that there are deep and hilarious differences in humor. We conclude by asking you all, what’s your waraino-tsubo?

- Presentation Language: Japanese
We can hear a variety of languages in Kyoto nowadays. As the number of foreign tourists visiting Kyoto continues to grow, Nishiki Market—long cherished as “Kyoto’s Kitchen”—is also changing. Through our interviews, we discovered challenges such as the rise of shops catering to inbound tourists, the closure of long-established stores, a shortage of successors, and a decline in local customers. With people saying, “Nishiki is not what it used to be,” we ask how the market can achieve sustainable development while preserving its traditions. Based on our research, we propose a new business model looking ahead to 2050.

- Instructor: 渡邉 松男
- Presentation Language: Japanese
Bosnia and Herzegovina, located in Southeastern Europe, experienced devastating battles around 30 years ago over the birth of the nation. Although there is no armed conflict today due to a peace agreement that ended the war, the underlying divisions among the various ethnic groups within the country have led to what is essentially an internal split. Based on field research in a country that feels as if multiple states exist within a single nation, this will discuss the current situation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and its future prospects.

International Legal Protection of Children from Hate Speech on SNS: It's Complicated
- Zemi: Ochi Zemi
- Instructor: Ochi Megumi
- Presentation Language: English
With the rapid growth of social media, transnational communication has become easily accessible to people of all ages. However, this accessibility also exposes children, who are more vulnerable in mental health and lack the capability to filter hostile information, to online hate speech. Despite the common assumption that international law standards can establish a single framework to protect children from such exposure, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. By comparing international conventions and different case judgements, the results show that each case offers different interpretations and possibilities. Considering these findings, this research aims to analyze the current absence of a unified legal framework to protect children from online hate speech and identify the complications that one would pose throughout the process.

Small-State Hedging and Economic Constraints: The Case of Mongolia’s Third Neighbor Policy
- Zemi: Watanabe Zemi
- Instructor: WATANABE Hiroaki Richard
- Presentation Language: English
For over three decades, Mongolia has sought to build and expand relationships with countries beyond China and Russia by implementing its “Third Neighbor” policy, aiming to secure autonomy from and reduce dependence on these two countries by resorting to a “hedging” strategy. The policy has strengthened Mongolia’s diplomatic position, as shown through engagements with countries such as the US, Japan, and South Korea. Its economic impact, however, has remained limited, with more than 90 percent of exports continuing to China, indicating that diversification efforts have largely stalled. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with board directors of the Central Bank of Mongolia and officials of the Investment and Trade Agency, this study demonstrates how trade asymmetry, financial vulnerability, and institutional fragmentation have constrained Mongolia’s implementation of its Third Neighbor policy, illustrating why external balancing has produced diplomatic flexibility but limited economic diversification and resilience.

Analyzing the Darkness of American Society through “Joker” - Class Conflict, Isolation, and Social Neglect –
- Team JDP
- Instructor: SMITH Nathaniel M.
- Presentation Language: English
The movie “Joker” (2019) gained worldwide attention for its dark portrayal of American society. What is the relationship between the depiction of social problems in Joker and the reality of American society? Are villains born to be a villain or are they created by the world around them? Joker critiques many social issues that America faces today, such as class conflict, isolation, and social neglect. We will critically analyse the film to explain how Arthur Fleck’s life experiences and social barriers led to his transformation into the Joker, an anti-hero shaped by society’s neglect. Using concrete examples, we will conduct a comparative study between the social problems depicted in Joker and ongoing social issues in the United States.

Home Is Where the Heart Is — Rethinking Kyoto’s Challenges Through the Conflict Between Minpaku Operators and Residents
- Zemi: 白戸ゼミ
- Instructor: 白戸 圭一
- Presentation Language: Japanese
As the number of tourists increases, the demand for places to stay has grown, and private lodgings (minpaku) have spread quickly as a new option in addition to traditional hotels and inns. However, this rapid growth has also caused problems, such as troubles between local residents and guests, and a decline in the quality of daily life. As a result, movements opposing minpaku have appeared in several areas. This study aims to explore the challenges faced by Kyoto City by interviewing people involved in anti-minpaku movements and city council members, using the minpaku issue as a way to understand wider social and community problems.

Just bought an IPhone- The Reality of Africa and Conflict Minerals
- Zemi: 渡邉(松)ゼミ
- Instructor: 渡邉 松男
- Presentation Language: Japanese
The IPhone you use every day is more connected to Africa than you might think. Inside it lies tantalum, a rare metal vital for modern devices. But behind this convenience is a harsh truth — tantalum is one of the “conflict minerals” mined in areas controlled by armed groups, where profits fuel violence and exploitation. Miners, including children, work in dangerous conditions, and local communities face poverty and instability. Although international efforts like the Dodd-Frank Act aim to stop this trade, enforcement is weak. We, the African Rangers, want to reveal this hidden link between your life and Africa’s struggles. By knowing where our technology comes from, we can make more ethical choices. Your smartphone is not just a tool — it reflects our world.

Is excrement the only thing men can give birth to? -Beyond the invisible wall-
- Zemi: 鳥山ゼミ
- Instructor: 鳥山 純子
- Presentation Language: Japanese
In 2025, a group delivered a street speech using the message ‘Men can only produce excrement’. Footage of this was released online, sparking significant controversy. While the group emphasised how women are often portrayed as victims in gender issues, it simultaneously downplayed the aspect of men as victims within the same gender issues. In Japan, particularly until nearly half a century ago, patriarchal culture and customs remained deeply entrenched. Within such a context, it is difficult to conceive of men, who held social privilege, as victims in gender issues. This presentation therefore focuses on the gender issues faced by men in contemporary society.

- Zemi: 西村ゼミ
- Instructor: 西村 智朗
- Presentation Language: Japanese
Global warming is a reality recognized by everyone. Despite the existence of the Paris Agreement with 195 member countries, the current situation shows that the world has not yet fully adapted to the damage caused by global warming. In this presentation, I will analyze and compare other international treaties to explore legal mechanisms that can effectively promote state compliance. By integrating perspectives from international relations and international law, I aim to propose ways to strengthen the effectiveness of international legal frameworks for more practical and enforceable climate action.

Have you ever felt despair at the gap between the realities that happen in the world these days and your ideals as you learn more about international aid? As we learn about international assistance every day, we find ourselves trapped in a deep swamp of despair and unable to escape. We explore the difference in supportive attitudes between individuals who study international relations and those who do not. Is this difference due to a lack of knowledge or the result of learning about realities? Through social surveys, we analyze people's subconscious and reveal their true character. The Evolving Vision of the World Expo: Comparing Osaka 1970, Osaka 2025, and Riyadh 2030
- Zemi: Amekawa Zemi
- Instructor: Amekawa Yuichiro
- Presentation Language: English
This research examines how World Expos have reflected shifting global visions and priorities by comparing Expo ’70 (Osaka), Expo 2025 (Osaka–Kansai), and Expo 2030 (Riyadh). Although Expos were founded to promote world peace and international understanding, they have been continually shaped by geopolitical context—from Cold War rivalries to today’s imperatives of sustainability and cooperation. By analyzing each Expo’s themes, design choices, and patterns of international participation, the presentation shows how their role has evolved from showcasing national achievement to fostering shared solutions to global challenges, and it asks how future Expos can remain neutral yet meaningful.

Pressure from both allies and potential threats, including Russia to the North and China to the South, further adds fuel to the argument to increase defense budgets. How is the JSDF adapting to these issues and preparing for the future?
