Today, wars and conflicts are still taking place all over the world, and even Japan and other East Asian countries have been expanding their military capabilities. In order to alleviate tensions and realize peace, we think we must not simply stick to the military matters, calling for disarmament. We believe that eliminating the underlying fears rooted in military expansion, and building a relationship of mutual trust will ultimately result in disarmament. By using the example of the Cold War which saw progress in disarmament through improved relations, we would like to explore the possibilities of peacebuilding in Today’s East Asia.

For several decades, Japan has been a leading destination for foreign workers from Asian countries. However, in recent years, it is increasingly losing its appeal as the go-to place for employment and less people from Asian countries choose Japan as their workplace. Given the urgent need to address its aging workforce, how can Japan attract more labor, particularly in the care industry, from abroad? By comparing various situations and policies from other countries, we will explore why foreign workers are becoming less inclined to choose Japan as their workplace and what they expect from Japan as an ideal employment destination.

In April 2023, each university posted a warning and cautionary statement for teachers and students regarding Chat GPT, a generative AI that is currently a hot topic.
In response to this, we thought it would be possible to objectively examine the use of Chat GPT through a survey in which university teachers were asked to compare their students' writings on a specific topic with the writings generated by Chat GPT.
Through this survey, both students and teachers will be able to understand the current situation and clarify what they need to do in order to write their assignment reports.

The COVID-19 pandemic has cast a spotlight on the existing gender disparities in the Japanese labor market, underscoring the urgency of addressing these inequalities. This study investigates the impact of the pandemic on the gender gap in employment in Japan, delving into the intricate factors such as income, wage, and unemployment rate. We find that the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated pre-existing disparities. Our group focused on the influence of Kpop and how it flourished in the North Korean peoples’ mind, which could be introduced as more effective and powerful tools than the atomic bomb in the way how it reshapes peoples’ minds without South Korea's direct interrupt or approach. In order to present our idea, we will guide with some examples of the macro and micro impact of Kpop in North Korea, with examination of soft power. Moreover, the concerns due to the tensions in the region and the international disputes will be introduced, emphasizing the need for strategic and flexible diplomatic efforts, as the use of soft power against North Korea should be approached thoughtfully to address human rights and ultimately work toward peaceful reunification.

How much does international law contribute to providing fundamental human rights regarding child labour in the fashion industry?

  • Zemi:Ochi Zemi
  • Instructor:Ochi Megumi
  • Presentation Language:English

This research is grounded in a comprehensive exploration of the privatised fast fashion industry's concerning issue of child labour. It employs a two-pronged approach, incorporating case studies and analysis, which draws strength from internationally recognised conventions and laws addressing child labour. Through an examination of real-world case studies, this research uncovers the complexities and nuances of child labour practices in the industry, shedding light on the crucial role played by all actors. The analysis is informed by international conventions and laws, establishing a benchmark for ethical and legal standards. The summation of empirical evidence from the case studies and a framework provided by international regulations lends compelling support to the assertion that reinforcing corporate accountability represents a promising avenue for mitigating child labour within privatised fast fashion, ultimately fostering a more ethical and responsible industry.

F・R・I・E・N・D・S: Community Formation and Belonging in College of IR

Our group made an observation that many of the foreign students and Japanese students do not socialize much outside of class. It is common to see foreign students mingle with each other rather than see an international group of students socializing. Therefore, we decided to explore the topic of community formation and belonging at Ritsumeikan University, College of IR. We will organize fieldwork and surveys to determine the patterns and backgrounds behind this phenomenon. Our group would also use our experience to compare and contrast the situation at American University and Ritsumeikan University. Interviewing different students from the JDP program and other foreign students, as well as Japanese students from both IR and GS students would provide us with insight from different perspectives.

Barbie-ism: Beyond the Plastic Dream

When Barbie first appeared in 1959, she had a career, providing an alternative to traditional gender roles to young girls. However, her idealized feminine form soon overshadowed those values. Mattel strategically expanded its Barbie business beyond just a plastic doll by trading its licensing and making other Barbie commodities. Attention and controversies brought by different levels of consumers such as children, parents, critics, and fans gradually stabilized Barbie’s iconic but complicated status. In 2023, a new Barbie movie was sensationally released and caused a global phenomenon. The movie recalled the feminist controversy, and obsession with pink, and even led to political debate, yet financially well-succeeded. Our research investigated the transformation of Barbie from a plastic doll by being celebrated, criticized, and communicating with society.

We seek ways to export J-POP more internationally. As a comparison, we will use South Korea's K-POP. We will compare K-POP and J-POP in terms of both domestic and international sales, as well as in terms of CD sales. This trend can be seen as continuing from the first Korean boom. There are four Korean booms and all booms became successful. On the other hand, J-pop has had less influence outside of Japan. Therefore, we will read effective strategies from the successive Korean booms and seek new strategies to bring Japanese J-POP out to the rest of the world. Moreover, we will find the characteristics of both cultures.

We conducted a study on "underground idols" to better understand the distinctions between mainstream and underground idols.
Given the challenge of differentiating between these categories, our aim was to elucidate the concept of underground idols by examining public perceptions.
Our research methodology involved conducting a comparative analysis of the prevailing perceptions of both groups.
Regarding underground idols, we obtained insights through interviews with their fans, surveys, and direct interactions with the idols by attending their concerts. In the case of mainstream idols, data collection was primarily conducted through surveys.
The findings revealed notable variations in the perceptions held by different individuals, suggesting that media played a significant role in shaping these perceptions.

Fair trade is a system that aims to improve the lives and independence of producers in developing countries through fair and equitable trade, but do you know how producers use the money they earn through trade? The use of the incentive money, called Fairtrade Premium, which is added to the price of the product, is decided by the producers' associations, and is used in more diverse ways than we can imagine. We focused on the differences in the decision-making process of producer associations, which we considered to be related to such diversity in the use of premiums, and explored what kind of decision-making process would be desirable for the more effective use of premiums.

Redefining BRICSian Stereotypes: Uncovering the True Intentions of the Rising Global South Economic Forum

  • Zemi:Ataka Zemi
  • Instructor:Ataka Hiroaki
  • Presentation Language:English

In light of the recent BRICS summit in South Africa, which revealed the upcoming expansion of this economic alliance of Global South countries with the inclusion of six new members, discussions arise regarding whether BRICS’ growth will eventually lead to a shift in the global economic order. However, whether BRICS aims to do so remains a mere speculation. Accordingly, this research qualitatively examines the language of BRICS’ summits, communiqués, and official statements, juxtaposed with the discourse surrounding the alliance from experts to unveil the true intentions of BRICS and elucidate whether the widespread narrative of BRICS’ challenge toward the Western-led international order is just a mere overreaction by the Global North.

Naming Hunger: Problematizing Food Wealth Narratives at Ritsumeikan University

  • Ritsumeikan Food Bank
  • Presentation Language:English

Have you eaten today? What did you eat for breakfast? Most people pay no attention to such simple questions, but for food-insecure individuals, it can invoke feelings of discomfort and shame. While most think that people who are food insecure live in a different world than your own, these people could very well be people in your own community. For this reason, our research aims to quantitatively assess the extent to which students at our institution are impacted by food insecurity. Our primary goal is to define and shed light on food insecurity and identify its prevalence among the student population. We strive to create a supportive and inclusive campus environment where every student's basic needs are met.
