To everyone who wants to work on global environmental issues

Mother Lake Biwako

Due to our close location to Lake Biwa (known as “Mother Lake” locally), Ritsumeikan University Biwako Kusatsu Campus (BKC) is the best location to study the environment and take on environmental issues.
Want to learn about environmental problems in Environmental Systems Engineering at a world-class, state-of-the-art research facility?

What kind of knowledge and skills are necessary to solve an environmental problem? Many people would answer this with the knowledge of how to purify water and produce clean energy, and while these are of course important, there’s much more.
In the Department of Environmental Systems Engineering, students learn extensively about the relationship between humans, society and nature, and are empowered to confront environmental issues in a comprehensive and practical way.

Environmental Systems Engineering Research

Environmental Systems Engineering Research

We are researching ways to solve environmental problems through 3 approaches: Environmental Engineering, Social Systems Engineering, and Construction Maintenance Engineering.

After graduation

Many Environmental Systems Engineering gradates play an active part in urban and environmental fields, with knowledge and skills gained from their studies in this department. Particularly the graduates who go on to graduate school are often able to realize their dreams and become a specialist in their field of choice.

For those who would like to enroll in Environmental Systems Engineering, the university-wide entrance exam (science), department-specific entrance exam, and the national “Center Test” are all acceptable examinations.
At first glance allowing all of these exams might seem confusing, but we’d like to provide interested students with different kinds of exam opportunities so they may find one that fits the best for them.
I am looking forward to meeting you on campus.

What’s the difference between High School and University? In university you learn, by your own will, about things you are interested in. Additionally, university is about discovering new techniques and systems that are helpful for people and society.
Let’s experience the enjoyment of creating something completely new, and contribute solve problems for the local and global community, together.

For students transferring from technical school

For the students considering transferring from technical schools to Ritsumeikan University Department of Environmental Systems Engineerin.
These days many people are interested in the aquatic and the global environment, and you can study these topics extensively at our university.
Since we encourage participation in overseas countries, including developing countries, students can see for themselves, and learn to think in a way that will stay with them for their lifetimes.
In addition, we recommend that you continue to work on the same research theme after going on to our graduate school.

Globalization is quickly becoming a requirement in every field. Well-rounded engineers with business-sense are high in demand -- people with both broad knowledge and knowledge in their specialties.
The roles of undergraduate and graduate school are different. Graduate school is a place where one concentrates on one’s specialty, and after graduation is able to really contribute to society.
